How can I get my puppy to drink more?

I have noticed my puppy (11 months) is not drinking like she was. She had the runs on Friday. I called the vet and they said to giver her Chicken broth with rice. However she is not really drinking water. She will eat ice cubes. I have frozen some chicken broth to try to get her to get fluids in. She will drink the Chicken broth with some rice but not really liking it. Can you offer any suggestions on ways to make sure she gets in her fluids?
 
So today is Sunday..how are the poops? Was there something differant in her food that led to the poops.Does she have a temp?

How is she eating? Don't know if it will work or not,but if her appetite is good,try a bit of wet food mixed with dry kibble,or possibly chicken broth in her food.
Try just putting ice cubes in her water dish,sometimes curiosity of them floating will get them to drink.

I woul'dnt let loose stools go on for long,need to find out why she started having them.

I beleive my husband put too much peanut butter in her kong on Friday morning. He put a Tablespoon full in, instead of the 1\2 Teaspoon I usually do. She is 16lbs. She usually eats 1 cup of dry dog food. We have 30" of snow and she was playful and enjoying the snow but she just has not been drinking as much as she usually does. Friday I gave her nothing but ice cubes. Yesterday I gave her Chicken broth and rice am & pm (1\2 cup broth and less of rice each time) She ate it all in the morning but did not eat it all last evening. She is peeing. I take her out every 2 hours reguardless. No poop at all yesterday. This morning I took her out into the snow (a grassy spot cleaned off for her). She would not go. We took a walk around the block to her favorite "poopy spot". She would not even sniff it (Snow covered I guess). We returned home and she did poop outside (runny again).
When I called the vet the receptionist said to give her Pepto bismal. I was not able to talk to the vet but this seemed strange to me. I had never heard that.
 
We give my dogs a little pepto bismo when they have upset stomachs. Also, try a teaspoon of PURE canned pumpkin (not pumpkin filling). This always helps Bailey when her poops are a little loose.

I hope she feels better soon.

Well crap...Some vet! Sorry but that would irritate the living crap out of me. And I don't think it's quite the protocol for a receptionist to be giving out medicinal info,and especially just to say"give her pepto"

I do think "IF" I were to pay the vet another visit,I would be having some conversation with him about his receptionist.But that's the way I am.

Have I givin it, sure but I use the pills. Have'nt done it as of recently,but Earnhardt has gotton them in his 6 years,due to an upset belly,or loose stools.I'm not one to run to the vet over every upset belly,especailly if I know there's a cause.
When in doubt..yep I'd have my butt at the vet.

With a puppy its differant. Is there a vet on call for you on the weekend?

So Friday,no meals but ice cubes,she only ate a bit of rice & chickien broth & rice on Saturday..no supper.

Looking at that,she has'nt had enough in her belly to warrent a good poop.What goes in must come out,and she's had nothing solid in her belly.

Is it runny,or pudding consistancy,is there anything visable in the poo?Mucus,blood? Those are things that should be said to the vet. Peanut butter in excess,will give loose stools.I've see it happen.

If you have no vet available on Sunday,I'm thinking continue with the light diet,at least she is eating something. Anything in the belly is better than nothing. She's getting liquids with chicken broth.Plus she's eating snow.If all else fails,and she's liking snow,I'd be bringing it in her water bowl,let her have as she pleases.And if no better,I'd be going to your vet,or another one you may find on call for the weekend.

Hopefully it's just an upset belly,and nothing more.She may just need a little time for her belly to settle.

In my Vet's office, there really aren't any true Receptionists. Most of them are Veterinary Technicians and have worked there a long time. I ask for, and receive advice from them frequently and I have confidence in them. I know that they recognize a situation where they should refer you exclusively to the Vet.

Upset to the digestive system are pretty common in a pup's early months. There's lots of stuff for your pup to get used to and for you to figure out for tolerances. As long as the reactions aren't extreme or last for too long a little short term TLC and some investigation on you part should be enough. In additon to the pumpkin and chicken and rice solutions, if you want you can also administer some Kaopectate.

Many receptionists at vets are actually vet techs or nurses, in fact at my clinic a vet often fills in as receptionist. I get advice from them often, if its not something they can handle they will ask the vet. But I think tummy upsets are pretty standard. I got some doggy kaolin from the vet to keep in the fridge, but its just the human stuff in a small bottle and with the doggie dose worked out.
