How did you raise your Sheltie in an apartment? Regret starting to sink in.

These things will happen, don't be so hard on yourself. It's a process, not a race. I suggest a safe place for your baby when you can't watch like a hawk. Could be an ex-pen lined with puppy pads, could be a fenced in linoleum area like a kitchen. Have some toys in there. Could be a crate if that is what works for you but doesn't need to be.

Gavin was probably paper trained by the breeder, since he would always hit those as opposed to carpet. He learned to amuse himself quite easily when I was busy.

:yes: an x-pen (large) could be a good solution
 
Thanks for the xpen suggestions, I'll definitely consider it and bookmarked it! Would he still potty in the pen? I'm worried that puppy pads would send the wrong message.

Also, how do you train yours to not bark as much? It's gotten worse for mine recently especially after a week of daycare so I'm going to try to train him to "speak" and "be quiet". I ignore him and cover his crate when I have to crate him (chores/cooking/eating) but it often startles me and I worry about the neighbors especially when we have to wake up around 5AM.
 
Shelties are so darn smart that your pup will figure it all out eventually. But the pen won't prevent him from going, just will mean he will not go on your carpeted floor. I used a puppy potty with a grate in a fenced in kitchen when I went to work (https://www.amazon.com/Richell-Trax...=wiz+dog&qid=1565149857&s=pet-supplies&sr=1-2), and never had a problem with it as Gavin would always prefer to go outside if I was home to take him out. even at 3 AM. The pad trays weren't a good idea as he would pull them out to chew on them.

You definitely often have to keep going outside with the puppy,
go long walks, too
- so that it learns that is where the business goes.

The pad is only for mishaps, so it learns that it is only on pads it can be done
- if the puppy can not come outside in the open air
(also if you don´t close / use the x-pen)

Ha I keep reading it’s best to train to bark and be quiet on cute. Since he’s a Sheltie I’m not expecting a lot of results.

I hope so. I will take him out even more now. He just had another accident while we were training and didn’t give the usual sign.

He actually doesn’t like the outdoors that much. Do you think it will take longer for him to start waiting by the door?
