How long can/should your dog hold it?

Pee Me a River

MMM is a water drinker. By the time one of us gets home, he is dancing at the door. This is after a 8-9 hour day. And then he just "goes" for what seems like forever.

We let him out in the morning, as soon as we get home and then right before bed............~~~~(a little nose pops around the laptop)~~~~~yes, McKinley I know,........let me finish writing this and I will let you outside...........well, there you go folks, it is bedtime and MMM wants his last break of the night...............

Say Good Night to the forum, MMM...........

Good Night All................Sleep tight!

Thank you all for your input. I'm not going to worry too much about it :smile2:

At the beginning, when their first being house-trained, then schedule is critical. But once trained, I think that mixing thing up is not a bad thing. It just allows extra flexibility in your own life.

That being said, when we're on a normal schedule, the boys go like clockwork. I can almost time them from the minute I get up to the minute they do their business. The key point is the minute that "I" get up. Not when they say its time. :wink2:

Hmm...Marlowe still dictates when I get up. He does operate on a schedule so it is quite predictable but it does mean I don't get to sleep in on the weekend when I stay up late (and let him out late). I think I should start mixing up a little now.

I wonder if it is a sheltie thing only? Merlin already will happily hold during the day for 2 or 3 hours, despite me keep trying to get him to go. Last night he slept from 10pm until nearly 7am, that's nine hours for a nine week old pup!:eek2:

I got Marlowe at 11.5 weeks and he slept through the night from the first day. It was a pleasant surprise

Bailey can hold it for 9-10 hours. Other than over night, she very rarely has to hold it for that long. Since I can't hold it for more than a few hours, I don't expect my dog to be able to. I try not to let her go more than 5-6 hours without a potty break.

It amazes me that Marlowe can hold it for as long as he does, even when given the opportunity to pee. I would certainly be uncomfortable if I had to hold it so long!

My adult dogs can hold it , it seems forever. Easily 14-15hours.

Marlowe has held it for 14-15 hours before but that was under extenuating circumstances. It was right after he was neutered and I called the vet in a panic thinking that something must be wrong. The vet told me he was just sore and didn't want to go.
