How many of us feed raw??

Sheltie Naturals

Ania, have you tried freezing salmon fillets? Romeo didn't like it raw and room temp but seems to take to it frozen (I forgot to take it out the night before to thaw!) Like a fishy popsicle stick.

That's the site. And no I have not tried to feed the fish frozen. I will have to give that a try :rolleyes2: Thanks for the hint.

I will apologize right off if what I am going to say upsets some.

Raw food is great if that is the way you want to go. I have heard many say that you need t look at wolves and what they eat. Ok if that is what you think wolves also have much differant digestive systems since they eat a majority of meat they catch. It has not been bred out them like most of the dogs we now have as pets. Dogs are NOT carnivors, but are omnivors. It means they eat things like grass, berries tree bark and things like this...not meat only

Ok that aside lets look at dogs today, like mine, who have medical issues. Feeding them a raw diet is a death sentence...even a perfectly prepared raw diet can cause severe problems in dogs with already weakened systems. My vet had a wolf hybrid. He went the raw diet route since he was part wolf. He bought the best meats for the dog, but unfortunately even the best meats and prepared raw diets (which he also fed him) caused severe problems and the dog died at age 6.

I will stick with the holistic food I feed my babies, whose health has improved 100% since I started them on it. I will not risk the well being of my dogs because some praise the raw food diet. Look at my dogs and then say "nothing but raw"

Hmmmm...I find that pretty ironic since my dogs have access to woods (a state park) every day with a variety of foliage, berries, grass, and bark<?>, and they have never once tried to eat these things as part of their daily meals even when they were on kibble.

All of the research that I have read supports the fact that WE are omnivores with teeth and mouth structures to support these facts and DOGS are carnivores with teeth and mouth structures to support that also.

Also, dogs must have a different digestive system than us otherwise they wouldn't be able to eat he rotten things they do (like trash!) and live through it :smile2:

Oh, and a side note...I had a puppy get in the bag of potatoes yesterday and munch on one....he promptly vomited it all back up. If he was designed to eat that sort of thing, why would his body discard it? Same thing with grass?

The whole carnivore/omnivore thing is a bit of a difficult topic. Taxonomically and physiologically, dogs are carnivores. They are classified in the taxonimical sense under "carnivora", and their digestive structure (dentition, length of tract, production of enzymes, etc.) is pure carnivore. Behaviorally, they WILL eat veggies/fruit/random other stuff. So that makes them opportunistic carnivores. Physiologically they are carnivores, but they won't snub other foods, and have an intense "sweet tooth" so will scarf most anything sweet (friuts, for example). Just because they WILL eat it, doesn't mean they HAVE to eat it. If that is the case, then my guys are marshmallowivores or peanut butterivores. Gio ate a pair of sandals when he was a puppy, does that mean he needs sandals in his diet?

That said, I totally agree that a raw diet won't work for some dogs. Your "average" dog will do wonderfully on a raw diet. A certain portion of dogs are blessed with fantastic genetics and will do wonderfully on whatever you feed them. And a portion of dogs have outstanding issues that just do not mesh well with a raw diet. Raw is not a cure-all for EVERY dog, there will always be exceptions to the rule. But those exceptions are few and far between.

I feed Treader raw.:biggrin2: I'm going to feed my GSD raw too once I can afford it.
I don't really buy the "dogs are omnivores" thing. As has been said, just because a dog will eat veggies does not mean he needs them.
Ever heard of the lions that were fed grains for three years and did fine?

lol...you're kidding right?

Children will not eat something if it is not fed to them either frequently at first, or it is an unfamiliar food. Dogs are the same way of they have been eating something like kibble or raw food all the time. Try giving them something unfamiliar they are not accustomed to and see how they react. Just because it is something YOU may not feed them does not mean if they were surviving alone and not being fed what WE feed them does not mean is it came down to them surviving they would not eat it. They are no longer in the wild so they do not need to forage for what they need to survive. I introduced raw fruit and veggies to my younger dogs early on and they adore it now, however the dogs that have me when older had been eating kibble all their lives and literally spit it out. Think of other countries that serve some truly appaling foods like monkey brains, raw meats and fish. They think of it as plain old food...we may look at it is disgusting. If you ate it all the time that is ok, but if not would you eat it if while in that country it was the only food available to you to survive. You will not die. You may get sicj but when hungry you will look to eat it. You never know you may find out you like it and will for it in the future. I am sorry, your comment is really very funny if you think about it

Well, I am literally surrounded by a large forest right up to my house, and my dogs have definitely never longed to, or tried to eat bark. Maybe just to chew on stick or piece of wood they find, but I can say they don't want it as part of their diet.

I am doing partially raw- thanks to Crestlynn. :smile2: and partially kibble. I am hoping to go completely raw one of these days.

My dogs have always had a liking for grass, plants, leaves, ferns etc. Moss is a particular favourite :biggrin2:. Not sure if they should be eating it, can't find anything that says they shouldn't. Maybe it just depends on the dog.
