How often to take them out

We have had Guinness for 4 weeks . He turned 12 weeks yesterday. I am rusty with puppies- it's been 10 years since we had a puppy. We have a 5 year old sheltie named Reilly but we got him as a rescue when he was 3 and was fully potty trained. This is new to us. When home I am taking to pup out every 20-25 minutes and watch as he goes pee. However there are still lots of accidents - have had3 this morning alone when I have just had him out 10 minutes before. Not sure what I'm doing wrong or is it just that he isn't ready yet. We have a fenced in yard which is making it not so bad. Any advice is appreciated

Are you giving Guinness free roam of the house? If so, I would recommend that he be limited to a doggie playpen when you can't be right on top of watching him for accidents. With a little pup the typical schedule is out as soon as they wake in the morning, out right after a meal, out after any playtime and out right after any nap time. Big praise when he does his business outside. He is still very young and accidents will happen but if you limit where he can have those accidents it will be much easier, you are more likely to be able to catch him in the act, give a gentle "no" and then carry him outside.

Are you staying outside with him when he goes into the fenced yard? This is important during the training stage because if you are not out to make sure he has gone, he often will be too busy exploring or playing and not do his business until he is back inside.

Thanks so much trini- yes I am out with him most of the time or if not watching from the door because I forgot to get my shoes on first. :) he does not have free rain - have two baby gates to keep him in a smaller area. He has also been going in his crate a few times. He is playing a lot so I know that increases the output. Taking him outside about every 25 minutes to 1/2 hour

My little one is 12 weeks and when we take her outdoors she pees immediately then likes to wander in the backyard where she pees another 2 or 3 times, same with the poop, she will do the first poop within minutes of being outdoors then another poop after wandering around. It's as if she is too busy and excited to explore her yard to get all that pee and poop out right away. We are outside a good 15-20 minutes before she has finished and wants to go indoors. If she wants to go indoors after 2 minutes I pick her up and place her back in her pee/poop spot to remind her she isn't done yet.
Now she will paw at the door when she needs to go pee or poo.

So maybe I just need to takehim outside longer. He gets so cold - we live in Ohio so after theorist time he wants to head back inside. I will try just putting him back on his pee spot

This bitter cold is hard on a tiny pup and you are right to be watchful and get him back inside fairly quickly. It really sounds like you are doing everything right and it will just take some time. Make sure when you clean up any accidents that you use a solution make specifically for that purpose...standard household cleaners don't mask the smell for a dog's ultra sensitive nose.

It must be difficult trying to housetrain when it's so cold out with a young pup. As others have mentioned I also would let Piper out and wait for him to have at least 2 pees before he'd come back in but that was in the summer so it was easier. I also would tell him to go pee so he came to know the word so if it was raining out I'd get him to go on a puppy pad on command (it worked most of the time), we'd also do that if we went out and I couldn't let him go on the grass then I'd put the pad in the hatch of the car and tell him to pee. Good luck with your pup, enjoy this time because as frustrating as it can be they grow up so fast (although I'm enjoying the fact mine is pretty much through the housebreaking stage haha):smile2:

We seem to be making some progress. He has only had 1-2 accidents over the last couple of days so that is much better. He has gone in his crate a few times but I know due to work schedules he is in there about 7-8 hours - trying to get home asap and my daughter helps and gets home some days earlier than that. He is so darn cute and lovable. My youngest is in high school and has special needs and has been given permission to bring him into school for his birthday. He is just so excited

Sounds like he is doing great! He will have such a fun day at school!! :)

Laddie would stay outside all day if we allowed it. When we have had temps below 20 degrees we limit him and Chip to maybe 10 minutes.

Mama puts Laddie out pretty close to every 1 1/2 hours. Any excited play increases anxiety. He is doing so well and has only peed once in his bed (pee pads). Hasn't had an accident in the house for more than a week. Twelve weeks old today. Growing so fast I believe he will be over 16".
