How soon after whelping will you bathe the new mom? I don't want to stress her out, but she could really use a bath now! :smile2:
 
We do her skirts and tail as soon as she's done whelping, being careful not to get anything into her vulva, and making sure that she's nice and dry before putting her back with her puppies. I'm assuming that you're referring just to the rear end, and not to a whole-body bath?
 
yup agree with Tofupup on everything and I cut my girls down when whelping so there is actually little fur there that is messy (Mia looked like a smooth collie when I was done with her last time:lol:). The being dry before going back in with the pups is the MOST important! I usually just rinse the rear portion off with water as well because I dont want any soap residue left and chance the puppies getting it.
 
I was referring to her pants, but a whole bath would be nice too :) I had thought about shaving her belly and trimming her pants, but ran out of time as she delivered Wednesday and I had expected them Saturday lol

What about topical flea/tick medicine? It's about time for her monthly application. The fleas and ticks are horrible around here and I don't want any brought in to the puppies.. Would it be safe to put it on her, do you think?
 
I wouldnt treat her..I dont even treat mine when they are in whelp either...its not worth the risk. Besides shes probably outside for a limited amount of time anyway.

I trim off the pants not for whelping as much as afterward because I dont want a puppy getting stuck and strangled...Someone I know just lost a puppy 5 weeks ago from it getting strangled...such a preventable accident.:no: I do the front leg feathers and anything long on the body too..they lose it all anyway so no sense in keeping it around!

I don't do any flea or ticks meds either. Like Linda said they don't spend much time outside anyway. We always needed to pry Diva out of the box. One time we pushed her out the door and suddenly she was flying down the stairs. Seems she ran around the house and was slamming herself against the front door trying to get Papa Kevin to let her back in. I think she was out 30 secs.

True enough about the fur. Its gone and gone for a long time don't worry about cutting it.
 
It is a good idea, even now, after the pups have arrived, to shave, or at least cut the belly fur short. Puppies get frustrated when they get tangled in belly fur. Also it interupts suction if they are trying to nurse, and get a mouth full of fur. Their nails get caught, and they expend too much energy trying to find a nipple. Give 'um a break, and trim all that fur away, even as much as 3-4 inches up the sides from the nipples.
 
Thanks everyone :) Mom and pups are doing great and I too have to shove her out the door even now for a potty break. I won't worry about applying the frontline then, and I'll give her a shave, trim and partial bath tomorrow... whether she likes it or not lol
