Hello people

I'm just wondering if you guys could help me in grooming my sheltie since i've got no idea how to. Basically, i just comb him everyday which i doubt is enough. Can anyone help state a list of equipments i need and what are their usage ;D thanks a million.

Might I suggest probably one of the must haves for any sheltie owner. It is a book called "The illustrated guide to sheltie grooming"

It has been one of the best books I have purchased. And also the book "Sheltie Talk"

The grooming guide I purchased from Amazon. The Sheltie Talk is a MUST HAVE book.Often refered to as the Bible of sheltie ownership.Although it is an old book,it is a wealth of info.

I purchased a copy from a seller on Ebay.It is damaged (corner chewed by a puppy) but it just ads character to the book.To buy new,it is very pricey.I have seen it on amazon for upwards of over 100.00 in mint condition.

right now I am only using a pin brush, a comb, scissors and nail clippers.. a rake will be added when Belle starts to shed but right now her coat is not as full as it is going to be. I use a spray bottle of water and work in sections getting down to the root. grooming every day gets out a lot of hair that would be shed otherwise.

I do a very basic groom on Marlowe. This is what I use:

Small slicker - I use this on the fine fur behind his ears.

Pin brush - I use this on his body.

Blunt nosed scissors - to trim his feet.

Razor - I use this for a sanitary trim (aka poop chute).

Dremel - for his nails

Ice on Ice - I spritz it over him before I brush. I have found it to be very good at preventing mats behind his ears.

Thank you people. I'm utterly impressed by the replies provided. I'll probably seek help from professional groomed first and also seek guidance from my breeder who groom them for shows. Still, you guys are real helpful. ;)

Start small and work up your confidence.

Taking out the scissors for the first time can be scary. So again, don't go scissor happy right away.

First thing to tackle is the nails. You need to learn to those yourself because you really can't go more than a few weeks without trimming their nails.

When Bacca was still a baby, I used baby nail clippers on him to start, then moved to regular people clippers and then finally regular clippers. Then I moved to a dremmel. Best investment ever!

There is ton's of good info on this forum but I also recommend the CD from Silver Trails Shelties. Although it looks like they've gone online now since I bought the cd.

Good luck! And don't hesitate to ask if you have any specific questions.

I have been trying to get my Dutchess to let me brush her and all she wants to do it to try and bite the brush and runs away. When I talked to the breeder, she said that she didin't have any problem with her getting groomed. She did have a grooming table which I do not have. Is there any suggestions out there to help me help her be groomed?? I would appreciate any suggestions.

thanks,
Char - Dutchess's Mom
