How to keep a sheltie off the furniture?

Actually, when we had Spike, the Bichon, he showed us (and Buddy) a trick for how to keep him off the furniture. Call him by name, Say "Here, Spike" about 12 times. Cooo at Spike. Reach for him as he gets near to your chair and he will quickly run the other way. "Come, Spike" and pat at your legs; whistle for him. He will never come near you or the furniture unless you have something good to eat. I'm sure it will work for you, if you try hard enough.
Beg "My cute little Spikey". Yes, he'll certainly stay off the furniture.

No way to teach to stay off but to keep reenforcing the rules and to crate while your gone..
Back many years ago, my last Lab wasn't allowed on the furniture. She was great when we were home she never tried to get up on anything. However I noticed that when I come home there would be a warm spot on the couch or the covers on the bed were wrinkled in the shape of a 90lb Lab. Never saw her up there though.
The shelties go on anything they like as longing as I don't want to sit in the same place. Ember is the only one that will sit in my chair.
Like many of the other shelties, they arrange the pillows and rest their heads on them. Sometimes they are kicked on the floor. Depends on the mood.

I would love it if Smudge would get on the living room chair! For some reason he's anti furniture. I've tried bribing him and that doesn't work either. If I pick him up and put him on a chair or my grandmother's couch he'll simply jump off! 
He doesn't jump off of my bed because it's too high up. He'll stay in place long enough for a picture, and then off he goes! :sadsmile:

I am losing :sadsmile: last night after 30 get downs he even jumped on his (or he thinks) chair and hopped over to the couch for an attack on me... guess there is no secret but to keep trying. He seems more determined than Dow was that he needs to climb on things (makes me think the kids playset would get used)
hahah Yeah good luck !!! Personally I love Iris on the couch/bed cuddling... she was jumping up there within a few weeks of having her, it was the jumping down that would be tough (if i left the room to grab some munchies or something, I would hear her crying and come see her looking pathetically at me on the couch)
Neither of my dogs ever get on the furniture. Or at least all the way, we have a two feet on the ground rule...which means they will jump up and put their front half on your lap, with their back legs on the ground.
I had a dog last year for six months that had previously been allowed on the furniture. I probably would have given up and let her on the furniture, since it was a lot of work. But my dad pushed her down every time she got up and told her "Off". She learned it! Not that it did any good, because her new home let her on the furniture anyways!
Aztec was trained by Laika. Laika knew the rules, and when Aztec was a pup he jumped up on the couch. Laika chased him off the couch, pinned him, and barked at him. He never attempted to get on the furniture again.
I think as long as you are consistent with what you want he should learn. Until he is older, stick with him only being off the furniture. When he is older and better established on how things work you can build in the whole "invitation" aspect.

Thanks that would work good. Right now he tries to sneak up and be stubborn. Not sure if he likes the chair getting tipped to make him ooze of or not.

I do think its important to teach the dogs "Off".
I personally have to issue with dogs on the couch, cuddled up next to me. But when we go to my parents for a visit and I bring the dogs, my dad HATES dogs on couches.
They are finally getting the idea that at Dad's, couches and beds are off limits. (although I caught my Mom once cuddling the pups on the couch when Dad was out of the room! )
