Howling Sheltie

Hi, My Sheltie, Bobo, is 6 years old. When we first got him (he was 10 weeks) he was a very cute, quiet little guy. That didn't last long.. haha. He's always been a very loud barker and he barks at everything, which doesn't bother us. Over the past several years, he's started howling like a wolf. He does it almost every night around 2am. I've done everything to stop it, behavior modification, positive reinforcement, ignoring it, nothing has worked. He'll howl for about 5 minutes and then just all of a sudden stop and go back to sleep. Any help on how to stop it?

You have to find the trigger for this strange behaviour.

Is there a fox or racoon that visits your yard every day at this hour?

I'm experimenting with an ultra-sonic remote trainer right now (well actually....today I started). It has both positive and negative buttons.

So after I brought it home today, Indy started to bark because of a dog walking by. Pressed the Negative button. Instant stop. 30 second later, he tried again. Pressed the Negative button. Instant stop.

Ok, so message is getting through.....now to start supplementing positive with negative. Don't take this to the bank.....it's still a work in progress, but something to consider.

The manufactuer, btw, is PetSafe.

I know from my store returns that it probably works about 65%. The other 35% maybe not diligent enough or truly their dogs did not react to.
