I love when I discover that my dog is smarter than I thought...

This AM, I took Whisky out for his morning piss.

I was up early, so I figured I'd throw his little soccer ball and make run a little before everyone else got up.

But the ball was at the end of my yard, I was barefoot, the grass was cold and wet, and I didn't want to step in dog poop anyway.

So I just pointed towards the ball and said «Ball! Go get the ball! Go!». Well I'll be damned... he didn't hesitate, ran to his ball and brought it to me.

:eek2:

I never knew he understood this word.

Whisky FTW.

It's amazing what dogs comprehend! My girls know what "get the ball" means and they do it as well. Just wait until you have to start spelling things like "walk" and then he learns how to spell too! It's very funny!

My sheltie knows what the words and knows the spelling of walk and park.
Now were spelling krap (park).Just a matter of time till he figures that out.
When our phone ring, he barks like crazy if its one ring. He knows its for me.
He doesn't bark on my sons private ring which is two. I don't know if he thinks i cann't hear or if he thinks someone else is getting my attention.

If it weren't for pig-latin, I'd be in deep doo-doo. "Is it ime-tay for Layla's ath-bay???" "No, I'm just going to ush-bray her."

I never thought of pig latin, Chris, what a riot! We have to say "narb" for "barn" whenever we're going outside to it because they will all knock us over trying to get to the door to come. Pixie knows what narb means now so we've been reduced to gestures and code...pretty soon they'll be reading sign language.

smart dogs

I totally agree. When I open the bag where we keep our Frontline for the once monthly treatment- just open the bag- one of our shelties Zips out the doggy door and hides in the back yard. The other sits at my feet waiting for the treatment-no word necesary. When I get the nail grinder out they dutifully line up to get it done-altho they do not like having their nails trimmed. When I mention brushing one leaves the room and when I say "stair" they rip up the stairs. These stories clearly tell us that we pass of clues of our intentions to these guys when we don't even know we are doing it-- and that they are are lot more aware of our world of communication than we generally give them credit. People who live with dogs know how really smart and aware they are, although hard to prove scientifically we see examples of it each day. They integrate so well into our lives. I wonder how well we understand them in return?

Smart dogs , most deffinately !!

Animals are a lot smarter than we as humans give them credit for.
Chris you are a riot you are so funny.

Shelties are amazing!

My girl Zoey is a toy hound! She is the only dog I know of with her own overflowing toy box! I can tell Zoey to go get "hedge hog" - she will dig through her toy box to find him and bring him to me. Her new favorite toy is "lion" - she chose him off a shelf of toys at the vets office after her surgery/spay. She spent a good 5 minutes or so looking and sniffing at all the toys before making her choice.

OH No you too... and I thought my baby sheba had too many toys. That girl literally has like two HUGE Garbage bags and I mean the really extra big black heavy duty garbage bags filled to the tippy tippy top. We had to grab the extras and put them in another location. We never realized how many toys she really had until one day she decided to take them ALLLLL out haha.. let's just say we all had this face on :eek2:
