I walk out my front door and thank goodness the dogs didn't follow me out...
My neighbor is in his driveway and a very handsome example of a pit bulldog is standing there with him. I said, "who's that?"
He said he didn't know but the dog came up to their back door the day before and he was bloody. They took him to the vet and got his wounds cleaned, a rabies shot, and even bought him a toy, some food and a collar.
I asked what they were going to do with him and they said they would find him a home.
It is obvious he's battle scarred, and some wounds are very fresh. His ears are chewed, scars on his face and he was still bleeding at the lip.
He is young, intact, not an ounce of fat on him.
Neighbor walked him at the park and said it was like trying to hold on to a freight train... especially when he sees another dog.
Later that night, neighbor comes over. There is a funeral they are going to attend, will I walk and feed the pit bull in their garage. I said okay.
I don't know why I said okay because I was the chief ring steward for the obedience trial all weekend, and walking a pit bull wasn't in my plan.
But.. they are neighbors for more than 20 years... I said ok.
The first morning went fine. Out the door into the yard and he pottied quick, even pulled to get back in the house. Okay dog.
That evening went not as smooth. Dog drug me across three front yards, run behind me and I pulled something in my back. I made him think he was dragging a freight train... and everytime he checked in I gave praise and stuffed a kibble under his nose. He didn't want it, he wanted to hose every tree and shrub and he was curious about my fenced back yard, my car...
When I got him shoved inside the garage, I closed the door to the house. Big mistake. He jumped up on me, gripped me pretty hard and I gave him a shove and a scolding. He jumped on me again, this time taking me off balance a little and gripping my arm harder. I was a little panicked, so grabbed the bag of cat food and dumped it on his head. That bought me enough distraction to get out of the garage. He is a young and intact dog, I do not know for certain what his intentions were, but my gut was saying this is not a casual dog and not to get cornered by him.
Sunday morning I was quick about letting him in and out, had a hamburger in my pocket to get him back in the garage but showed it to him at the front door. He got a little excited. I was glad to feed him all the way to the garage and toss it in.
I was really bummed Sunday evening when the neighbors were not back yet, but it wasn't dark yet and I took him outside. He did not poop, but I had given him all the time and energy I could spare... back in the garage big fella.
He had ripped to shreds the bedspread they gave him to lay on. He found the stash of kitty food that I did not dump on his head.
I had my son go over to return their key, I was chicken.
I will talk to them later tonight, and urge them to call the animal control to pick this dog up. I think he's too much for a casual owner and he's already battle scarred and aggressive to dogs. I don't want him living next door to us!
I shudder to think what could happen if the dog got loose. They don't have a fenced yard!
I don't want to be responsible for a dog losing his life, ie.. the county pound, but what kind of life is being hurt and this dog will hurt somebody or kill another dog...
Sure hope I can scare my sweet, good and kind hearted neighbors into giving this dog up.
