I think Eevee is blind after spay...

Ok. My vet is still away on a vacation. This lady vet just charged me $220 for IV fluids and $10 for medication. I feel totally ripped off!! The vet below told me they charge $20-30 for IV. Why such price differences??

Anyway, I called a guy I know from Sheltie Rescue of Indiana and asked about getting a second opinion. He gave me a number to a holistic vet that also does arcupuncture for dogs. Another friend gave me a number of her vet, and when I talked to her, she said there are so many things you can do to help the liver before you do the ultrasound etc. I made two different appointments to go and talk to them to see which one I would like. I was crying on the phone like a crazy women. But the receptionist was kind enough to listen to all my ranting.

I like the sound of this holistic vet. But I have no idea what the differences are between the normal vet and a holistic vet. I hope we can sort this problem out so Eevee can be back to her happy self. Thank you soooo much for all your support!! I really appreciate it!!
 
The "normal" or mainstream vet will likely treat Eevee with chemical medications for whatever the diagnosis might be after testing. There are several medications used to treat seizures such as phenobarbitol. When Pixie went through this, I opted to start with holistics since she was so young at the time (4 months old) that I did not want to start her on chemical medications unless I absolutely had to. If Eevee has other medical issues that are causing her seizures however, you need to find out what those are and treat those problems and not just the seizures. Pixie's seizures were caused by being sick from coccidia and being vaccinated while she was ill.

My vet happens to practice both mainstream and holistic medicine and gave me the choice of having bionutritional testing done on her which it's likely your holistic vet will recommend. If not, you should ask about it. These are blood tests that will help the vet diagnose the problem. We've had wonderful results from acupuncture and holistic medications, which will be prescribed for your dog after the testing. We used three different holistic medications, but none were chemicals...they are natural substances.

A few points though. Holistic work is not inexpensive (although as you've found, neither is regular veterinary work) so be prepared for that. Also, my vet cautioned me at the outset that it might not work and we might have to resort to traditional medications. I was fine with that, but we were fortunate enough that homeopathics worked for Pixie.

I would do a consult with both the mainstream vet your friend recommended and the holistic vet if you can. This will give you a clear idea of your choices and make the decision which path to take easier. Good luck...we're here for support when you need us. Pats to Eevee and hugs to you!

Oh my, never heard of something like that happening, glad to hear your little one is on the mend. I can't even imagine how scary that was for you.

So if I'm reading this thread properly, the surgery goes awry and the vet wants to charge you for more post-op assessments????? Are you kidding me?????

I would run, not walk to another vet for an opinion. Maybe, I missed, something but, I'm sorry, but these kind of symptoms are just not the norm for a normal spay. I would be demanded answers, not having the asking for more payment. I mean, seriously, did they screw up somehow? If so, they should be held accountable.

Sorry for my vent, but these days I don't have alot of confidence in vets......

If I am following this, instead of using her regular veterinarian she took Eevee to the low cost spay clinic. When things went sour with their work, she turned to her regular veterinarian to pick up the pieces.
You would run, not walk, to another veterinarian because they will be charging her for the work they will be doing to try and correct the situation?

I was going to echo Barbs post... I cannot even in any instance figure out how this vets office feels compelled to charge,for this follow up care.

In vets defense,lets hope that they did not do something to put Evee in such dire condition. I am going to say,the assumption of a seizure was the culprit.

However,I do think if it were me,I would be having a very serious chat with the vet when he returns,and explain to him this follow up care should be part of Evee's post op care.

I am very relieved her sight has regained it self. I certainly would keep her activity level as low key as possible,until you see your regular vet.
 
Please forgive me if I am wrong here, but did Eevee get her spay at a low cost clinic? If her regular Vet did not do any of the spay services, then maybe the clinic she went to should be held a little accountable :(.

Again, I mean NO offense or disrespect in anyway, you have been through enough as it is. I am just trying to understand a little bit..:biggrin2:
