I thought I had a sheltie but could she be a collie?

Colonel Underpants is 19 inches and close to 40 pounds -- all muscle! Yep, because Shelties aren't as "stable" a breed as, say, retrievers, they can turn out over, under, etc. Beckon's sire was Pop Star, and his mother Norwood Nenana -- two of the top Shelties of their times. So of course they produced Sheltie-zilla! :lol:
 
Another plus-sized Sheltie owner here. Forrest is over 50#, and I call him my collie boy. I sometimes think he must be a collie, then I look at collie pictures & know he's a Sheltie :lol:

And the bat out of hell running? We call it zoomies, sounds like your boy has a bad case. Does he look like he'll never stop running wild when he does it? That's a sign that it's zoomies :wink2:. He should grow out of it, in time (mostly). Until then if you have room let him run it off.
 
My Beau is a rescue too. They told me me his was a mix too, but, looking at some of these pictures makes me think he's a pure bred. He looks like he could be related to Mignarda's dog Dickens'
 
Cranberry (on the left) measured 18" for AKC agility and Dixie (on the right) measured 15.75" for AKC agility. they are littermates so both are definitely shelties though I call Cran my collie boy- it seems once they hit a certain height that they get a more collie shaped head too:winkgrin:

My Sparky's 19 inches and 46 pounds. The vet said he needs to lose a few because of his arthritis and age, but he's mostly muscle, overall.
 
As to the big ones...every sheltie I have owned, with the exception of one little blue lass, was well oversize for the breed standard. Both my current blues, Faelee and Sketch, top the scales at 36 and 37 pounds with not one single scrap of fat on either one of them. I don't have a wicket for percise measurement, but both are probably about 20" at the withers.

Several years ago, when the AOL sheltie board was still active, someone came on the board and posted how she hated shelties that were big...she referred to them as "big fakes" and said she would never want to own one. It became a joke for all of us on the board who had big ones and from then on we lovingly referred to our biggies as "Big Fakes"...a title they held/hold with great honor.

Shelties can definitely go over size. I've got one, but he still looks like a sheltie in facial config. He I over 18 inches, but his face is 100% Sheltie.

Collies have a much narrower face and stop. Bonier structure, facial structure, etc.
