I'm getting 2 different opinions on how to proceed with Gypsy

Do what you're comfortable with. If you trust what your vet has to say then go with that.

My only comment about what the vet suggested is did he/she SAY Gypsy should try the WD diet for weight loss? I'm asking only because some times the reason they suggest vet foods isn't always made clear, maybe he/she likes it for a different reason.

I had very good results when Sadie was having digestive issues. (She too was tested for Cushings btw.) Shed had severe vomiting and diarrhea on and off for months and the vet food was the only thing that took away the symptoms

That being said, if the specialist did suggest that Gypsy's only problem is her weight, then I think that's just stupid.

I hope you get to the bottom of things soon!

Yes it was suggested for weight loss. Due to it's high fiber and water content.

Gypsy will barely even eat 1/2 cup of food per day. She get's a papaya chew with probiotics and a few dehydrated apple slices or a lamb treat w/glucosamine and chondroitin in it. I took everything Gypsy eats in a day to my vet the other week and he told me it wasn't much at all.

I just got off the phone with my vet. I told him I wasn't comfortable not testing her,That is just been nagging me since I got off the phone with him. He said he is hesitant to do the test right now due to her skin condition. her last outbreak started in April and we just about have the rash under control except for a few small areas where there is still some crusting left. Last year she had her first outbreak when they laid mulch and I was on vacation,this time they laid mulch a month after her surgery and she broke out. So we are thinking mulch is a problem but also stress,so He doesn't want to put her through any additional stress by testing her until we have her skin completely cleared,plus I found out they are going to remulch the complex in a week or two they are waiting for the delivery. I am not thrilled about this at all, I'm going to have to figure out some way to cover her as much as possible before taking her out and continue to wipe her with baby wipes when we come in. So until than we will continue with exercise as I have been doing and put her on WD, continue with her shampoo regimine,along with starting her on antibiotics again. Her poor body has been through so much in it's short 3 years I just want to come to a resolution to all of her problems. We both agreed to talk again in 2 weeks to see if she is free of all skin issues and if so we will test than. I am comfortable with this for now.
 
I would do the test. I would want the peace of mind. Good luck! Keep us posted. I'll keep you and Gypsy in my prayers.
 
I got on this site today (rec. to me by OntarioShelties! Thanks) to look for someone who had dealt w/Cushings. Like yourself I felt something was not quite right with our girl, 6yr. old, so took her for some bloodwork at Cornell as she also had AIHA (hemolytic anemia) 4yrs. ago. All it showed was elevated cholesterol which can be a sign of Cushings or thyroid issue they said. I have a follow up appt. w/our local vet to test her for the disease. She has been having accidents (pee) in house, began shedding quite a bit and just seemed "off". I also told them at Cornell our other sheltie has been sniffing her sides. He seems to have an ability for smelling illness which he did with 2 other dogs we had. So when he started sniffing I got alarmed......

If I was you Dawn I would def. have the test (there's more than 1 test that can be done for it).....maybe try the food but not for long term. Science Diet not the greatest out there. From what I have been able to understand about Cushings is it is either in the pituitary or adrenal glands, more of a hormonal imbalance thing. Not sure why the food rec. from your vet.

They recommended it for her to lose weight. She doesn't eat alot and the weightgain has been one of my concerns.she is also incontinent,who be laying there and just pee her pants,skin issues,chronic UTI's,tires easily from exercise,pants alot,excessive shedding and patches of hairloss. I don't like science diet either and she won't eat it.
Let me know how you make out at your next visit. It's funny my dog Chandler keeps walking up and sniffing Gypsy in odd ways also. Smart dogs our Shelties. Gypsy is currently having another skin outbreak so I agreed with my vet to get that back under control again before testing to avoid stress which seems to exasperate her skin issues. Keep in touch and let me know how your furbaby makes out.
 
why don't you just check her urine for cortison/ creatinine level just like Dr Quanog suggested- it is just a clean catch of urine for you to do at home.
While it is not 100% it is largely helpful to see which direction you are going... if it is neg you most likely not dealing with Cushing.
