I'm Worried About Sam I Am

Sammy, the Tazmanian Devil in a Sheltie Suit, is now 10 months old. The little pup that I was tempted to give away every day for the first 3 months we had him has now entangled himself in our hearts. Even the cat likes him!

Last week he was chasing crows at the park when all of a sudden he began limping. He didn't even want to walk home. So I carried him all the way (the 25-lb. tub o' lard!) As soon as I brought him home I set him down in the yard and he ran off. So I thought maybe he had just overdone it the day before at doggie daycare.

Today we were at the park again, and we noticed that his little leg was shaking. He wasn't really limping, just favoring it a bit and trembling. I examined his leg closely, comparing it to his other front leg, and it appeared normal. He did not show any signs of pain, no matter how I manipulated it. He walked home, no problem, but that shaking leg concerns me. He appeared normal the rest of the evening.

Any ideas what this could be? Janet

Sorry to hear about Sam. It's is worrisome when you don't know what's causing it. I would have your vet check him for Lyme disease. Lameness on one leg is one of the first symptoms we see, and it can be intermittent.

If you rule that out, your vet can see if he's strained or pulled something. But the trembling sounds to me like it could be Lyme. Our Barkley had it the first time when he was six months old and presented with intermittent lameness on one leg. Those ticks are brutal.

Poor Sam. If it were me, I'd put him on crate rest for two days. I know it's a pain, but no running or jumping for two days. If after two-three days of NO running he still has a limp, I would take him to the vet.

Could be lyme, could be a muscle issue, could be any number of things.

I agree that I'd keep him off it as much as possible for the next couple of days, and if it gets worse or continues to give him problems get it checked out.

Callie has problems with a distal digital flexor tendon that luxated when she was about 10 months old, and when we took her into the ortho vet, she was also diagnosed with grade 1 patellar luxation. Periodically she'll be running or spinning around and they'll go out of place. With a little massage she seems fine, but it's very sad to see her limping around when it bothers her. Apparently Sheltie's are rather prone to tendon issues from what our vet said.

Last week Dickens came up limping, favoring his right leg. This was just several days after I posted a video of him jumping a hurdle I had made him. Several board members advised me not to let him jump at such a height (it turned out that the hurdle was sixteen inches), and I was just about to lower it but allowed him to take a number of jumps before doing so. I considered Lyme disease, but didn't think it had had sufficient time to progress. After waiting several days the limp disappeared, which leads me to believe that he had done something to strain or otherwise injure the leg, probably from the jumping.

I doubt if it will hurt to wait a bit and see if the limp clears up on its own.

Thanks so much, everyone. I never even thought of Lyme disease. That is scarey! I looked it up on the web, and found that it is rare in Western Washington. However, if this continues I will definitely take him to the vet. Janet

My bet is he strained something. Spitfire is well a lunatic and runs around a lot and has collided with the trailer and motorhome at speed, so you get the idea. He looked like he was limping one time and he would do it then not which made it hard to tell. Well it was the weekend and not nice so he got to be house confined and after a couple of days all bugs, birds, grass and things not there were once again not safe
