This question is a bit on the graphic side so I apologize in advance.

I had my new, 9 month old male to the vet a couple of weeks ago for his initial check up and to talk about any concerns and schedule his neuter. I asked her about the discharge that is coming from his wee willy winky, (I guess the anatomical term is starred out :wink2:)and was told it is normal and will subside with neutering.

Well, fast forward two weeks, and this discharge, green by the way, is coming more copious. Copious to the point of getting all over his belly, his back leg feathering and his back feet. Not to mention the occasional drop on the floor. :ick I have trimmed some of the hair because it is causing the beginnings of mats to try to keep it from getting painful in what I suspect is a sensitive region. I use in scented baby wipes to clean him up as best I can.

Is this discharge really normal like our vet said? I always thought green was indicative of infection. The color and the increased amount still concerns me even with what she said. I don't think I want him having surgery if there is an infection...

If it is normal, how long until it subsides generally, after the neuter is done?

Gross isn't it but completley normal. I like to wait until my dogs are older around 2 so thier groth plates have a chance to completly grow. I remember my dog I got him to 16 months before I couldln't stand it any more.

He also has a greenish/yellowish discharge all over like you described. I shaved the area and also had a bottle of waterless shampoo that I would use to clean him up after his bathroom breaks and any other time he needed it.

After neutering it too a few weeks for it to completley go away.
 
That is such a relief bibluegirl! I know it is what the vet had said, but the amount changed so much so quickly. Though, I guess it's probably tied to testosterone levels which must be increasing. I was hoping to wait until he was one to have him neutered. But my vet basically convinced me he was basically going to turn into a jerk of a dog if I didn't hurry up and have it done.:no:

Oh well, he will be 11 months when he is done and at least with the timing I will be home from work to keep an eye on him and any licking.

My last intact dog was a Yorkie and I don't recall this happening. Gross :ick (love that smilie).

It's normal? I told myself if I get another dog for agility, I wouldn't neuter them until they were at least a year old, maybe older if I could handle it. But gross. Obviously I never made it past 6 months with my current dogs, but that's because I was told I should neuter them already, lol.

So....I'm curious, since the gross disclaimer was already stated...WHAT IS IT!!!??? That's coming out? And WHY? I mean, do human boys go through this too? Yikes.
 
According to our vet, it's smegma. As I have no kids without fur, I can't speak to the human baby boy.

We just got about 15 inches of snow and my 14.25" pup is doing his best American Eskimo dog impression. All the snowberries hanging from his dingleberries are doing wonders for keeping him clean. But, it's almost May, I'll swap the snow out for the baby wipes again. Blech!

That's a new one on me. Merlin gets a small amount of creamy discharge, but not in such copious amounts and he keeps it clean himself.

If it is that much and green I think I would get it looked at again.

I was also told to hold on to Merlin was 2 years before considering neutering - if I can last that long!
 
hmmm I have 3 intact males right now and Ive never seen anything green...a bit shall we say ummmm sticky at times under there but never green.....I simply wash them off ever few days so they arent sticky...thank goodness its hose weather again..makes things soo much easier!!!
 
Not sure how I missed this one.

This does not sound normal.

A small amount of yellow discharge is normal for intact males. It is called smegma. It is not alot and hardly noticable most of the time.

But if the amount changes or becomes copious, thick green- something is wrong. Sheath infection, LUTI, foreign body in the sheath, injury to the male organ the list goes on.

Justice had a sheath infection once. I needed to flush his um parts with dilute chrohexadine sol. Lets just say neither he or I were happy. But it cleared up in 2 days.

Sure glad you piped in Dr. Shelli. I have never seen this on an intact dog and my dogs were white - really easy to see anything on. My niece's dog however gets chronic infections of the prepubice because now he goes crazy licking himself- an acquired habit since the first infection. For someone that finds all things gross, she has become quite good with a syringe at cleansing Dakota's man parts.
