Is 12 weeks a bit too old?

Hi everyone

I'm new to the forum - greetings!

I'm looking into buying a Sheltie pup - a breeder has a 12 weeks old boy and i was wondering if anyone thinks this is a bit too old for the puppy to adjust properly at home (in terms of responding to training, his affection/loyalty towards us...etc). I know the average pups go home is 8 would would a month make any difference?

There's also the possiblity of waiting for another litter so i would really appreciate any comments or tips or experience to share. Thanks!!
 
I would have no problem taking home a 12 week old pup. In fact, I would rather have a 12 week old than an 8 week old. That extra couple of weeks with the litter can make a world of difference! I brought my Romeo home at 9 months old, and he has had no problem bonding or adjusting at all.
 
I wouldn't hesitate for one moment to have a 12 week old pup join our family. If you haven't already met the pup, you do need to before you commit to him. When you see him, you'll know if he's the one for you.
 
I've always read that the longer a pup is with his momma, the better. It gives momma more time to teach puppy manners, and from what I understands, it helps the puppy be a better dog when he is grown. 12 weeks sounds like a GREAT age!
 
I brought my pup home at 7 months and there was no trouble with him adjusting to his new home. He's a fantastic, well behaved, well adjusted dog.
 
My last puppy came home with me at 12 weeks and stuck to me like glue for the next 13 years of his life. :smile2:
 
My puppy was almost 13 weeks old when we took him home and it didn't seem to make a difference. I'd prefer to take a 12 week puppy home over an 8 week old as they may be easier to house train. Some breeders actually work with their puppies on house training so having an older puppy might be to your benefit.
