is it safe???

There's your answer, Barkley in NH

Shelly gets kept in her cage when we are at work and my son's at school. Shelly has food, water, toys and her bed in the cage. (We had her in the garage in an exercise pen but it's to cold out there now.) It's for her safty!! :yes:When someone is home Shelly has the run of the house. But her food and water are alway kept in the cage we free feed Shelly so when we are home the cage door is alway open for her to eat and drink. Now I must tell you Shelly cage is pretty big. Heck my son can even fit in it!

Perfecto!! I agree crated when unsure. They do very well crated because they do sleep when you're gone especially when they are an only furkid. I do not crate kia, but she has Tasha who is 14 years old and they keep each other company and are both very trustworthy. My house is puppy proof, aka child proof. Nothing around that can hurt them or they can get into. Wires are covered or unplugged. trashcan is covered metal one. Bathroom doors are closed. No chew things that have parts that can break off. Which they shouldn't have anyhow. Deffinately no rawhide or greenies while unsupervised. Hope this helps!!
By the way welcome to the forum and where in NH are you from ? I live in the White Mountains over by where the Old Man use to be but has since fallen.

My 1.5 yr old sheltie has been crated since I got him at 8 weeks old. He loves his crate! He sometimes just goes in there and hangs out. It's his place to sleep. I also have a dog walker that comes around lunch time and takes him out for a 45 minute walk around the neighborhood. Also, once or twice a week he gets to go to daycare which he loves. I'm gone from 7:30am to 5pm, and he is totally fine with it.

I highly recommend crate training as it just keeps them safe from eating things they shouldn't. When your pup gets a bit older, you can start leaving him out for short times, 15 minutes... see how it works and then go from there. I found that chewing stage lasts until 1yr or 1.5 yrs, but they will always have their strange moments.

Frankly, I'd rather my pups be bored and but safe.

Today, my son was home all day so Bacca was left uncrated. My son called me at work in the afternoon saying that Bacca was acting weird. Turns out that Bacca got "stoned" by eating a roach my son had left in an ashtray high up on his desk. It only took seconds for Bacca to find and eat it. (yes, again! - for those who remember my previous episode with Bacca and the clouds! This time I opted not for the stomach pumping.)

He's fine but has a terrible case of the munchies (yes, truly! He's been eating all afternoon! :o) and very wobbly on his feet.

I'm sorry, Barb, but I'm rolling around on the floor here. Munchies -- OMG!!! Poor, dissipated Bacca!

I've never crated my dogs. They all have a crate and a few enjoy laying in them and such...but since I am home with them, and even when I go to the store or out for periods of time, they have free reign of the house. With 9 dogs I never have issues. When Fox was younger he got into several things and chewed the daylights out of them (fire place logs, wood, motrin, sponges) He was hospitalized each time, but never had any permenant type damage done to himself. He still likes to chew at 2+ years old. He still gets into things and chews on them, but usually it is the legs on the chew toys. He also still likes squishy things to chew, but he no longer swallows what he chews. He just likes to tear things apart and it is his toys he does it to
