is it the dog food.. or am I looking at another cause?

I've read a lot of times that some of the 5-star foods aren't recommended for puppies or dogs that aren't super active because of the high protein.

You have a point there that I didn't think about... Jasper is in a companion home and we are not doing anything with agility and so forth. He and Annie will be strictly house dogs.

I may go ahead and switch to something that for less active dogs. It would be one thing if we were busy doing shows/agility competitions.. but since we are not... it stupid to give a high protein diet to someone who not really benefiting from it.

Personally, I use Diamond, and I've never had runny (or funny colored except when they ate the crayons) poo, but every dog is different.

Haven't we all had the crayon experience at one time or another!!!! That's one sure way to firm up the poop!

I had Romeo on Wellness Puppy too!! It didn't agree with him at all and would consistently give him mushy poop (not watery but not quite fully formed either) and it would not be the nice dark colour but a mustardy shade.

I switched him to Canidae and he had solid poop so I'm pretty certain it was something in Wellness that gave him the runs. I've since put him on half Canidae and half home cooked because Canidae has changed its formula and people who were on Canidae and switched to the new formula have complained that it causes runny poop too. Argh! I haven't figured out what kibble I'm going to use to replace Canidae once this big bag of the old formula runs out! Pity they don't sell Diamond here!!

I seem to be hearing alot about mushy poo (and that about what I would describe Jasper as being) from feeding them Wellness... that top with the high protein for active dogs... I think I am expecting to 'fit' my puppy for the Olympic and not for a house pet. /grin

I totally agree with what everyone else has said. We went from Nutro to Wellness looking to upgrade a bit, and Bentley's stool has been soft ever since. We're definitely switiching back. But then of course, I've heard people whose dogs love Wellness. I guess you just have to see what works for your dog.

Back to the comment about more fiber, if your dog is having loose stools more fiber is the last thing that you want! More fiber will more than likely make his stools runnier. It would work the same as a human eating a box of bran flakes to get their bowels moving.

It sounds like the wellness isn't working well for your pup, by the sounds of it you've done a nice slow transition and given it time. Its probably time to try a different food, if you haven't already.
