My mom calls Chase "little fox" all the time. I don't mind it as much as mini collie. At the end of our walk, there's usually five people that called him a mini collie so I snap at the next one that does.
Although, today there were two creepy guys in their own trucks yelling at me how smart "that" dog is and cute. :rolleyes2:

Bella is way cuter than the fox :smile2::yes:

I used to get the same with Tully!

But then I love the look of foxes - one day I would love to get one of those pet Siberian foxes!

Pike was mistaken for a fox once by real foxes. Rachel had him out for a walk on her property and 2 young foxes run out the woods straight towards him. They got about 20 ft from him realized he wasn't a fox and ran away. Of course, it could have been the charging Malamute that spook them.:wink2:

After that, she found the fox den later in the week. There were about 15 foxes playing and milling about outside the den as she peeked over the hill.

pssst....its the prick ears! Ok, inside voice shuddup!

Seriously though....Shelties do have a very wolflike/foxlike quality to them - size and expression. As the picture you attached shows.

I know its the ears..and i gave up on the glueing. I succumbed to the battering and accusations of abuse by my family.

I didn't read this entire thread.

But I wanted to say that my mom knew a man that had MINIATURE collies. No, not shelties. They were collies that were small. I am unsure whether they were truly shelties crossed with collies, or if they were collies that were bred down in size. They did not look like shelties however, not even big ones...and they were also big as far as comparison to shelties.

Where or how he got them I do not know, but he knew what shelties were and was quite clear that his dog was not a sheltie, but a mini collie.

I have had the same thing said about the Shelties I have owned. They would ask is that a minature collie? I would simply say, There is no such thing as a minature collie and tell them that they are a Sheltie. It was no big deal. I find that don't know about Shelties or Collies that dont own them, or very interested in them really don't know anything about them. So I realize their mistake. There are many breeds out there that I can't tell what breed they are. Sometimes I ask, sometimes I don't. I think by simply telling them how I replied might educate them more about the breed.

I have to say that the things that drives me the MOST crazy is when people call Miko "Lassie". :rolleyes2:

Soooo many people greet him by saying "Hey Lassie" or "Look! It's Lassie".

I say, "Well, Lassie was a collie, but Miko is a sheltie" and they look at me with a very... 'what's the difference?'-type look.

And yes... I've heard "miniature collie" a few times... but it doesn't drive me as crazy as "Lassie" :eek2:

I think the Lassie and collie comment comes later when the puppies get their full coat. Right now most people I've met is quite puzzle by what breed Mozart is. Though the cable serviceman asked then commented "hmm...he looks like a little lion" Yep, I have to admit with his ears up and the head fur quite full...he does look like a mini lion. I'm not bothered by any of the comment since all that asked ended up just wanting to give Mozart a good pat on the head.

I don't get to warped about my Sheltie being called a Miniature Collie. I personally do not know all dog breeds so can't expect others to be able to automatically recognize mine. (I personally get confused with the all the small white fluffy breeds, myself).

What I do worry about is that the term "miniature" is becoming accepted out there. This is the knowing breeding of purebred dogs in smaller and smaller sizes. THAT I have a problem with.
