Itchy Paws? Environmental Allergy?

Made appt w/ vet for Monday AM. Yeah, Murphy's foot is starting to become raw from the licking. I emailed the vet a pic from my Phone while we were talking.

Anyone have any suggestions what to do for him b/w now and Monday? Vet's aide didn't suggest much besides Benadryl. I'm planning to give him a Beth (w/ baking soda) tomorrow.
 
Phoebe used to lick her paws until she to the point of limping so I feel your pain. Doing the Nizoral treatment worked well but I understand it may be hard to get in the U.S. It's still available here. Nizoral is a human anti dandruff, anti fungal shampoo that I would put rub on the dry feet making sure to get it into the nail bed area and between the pads. Then I would leave it on for about 3 - 5 minutes and rinse if off and dry the feet. I would do this for 3 days. Hope whatever you do gives some relief. Healing thoughts sent your way.

Do you have any booties? I'd put those on anytime Murphy is going outside. They really did help with Miko, as in within 24 hours he was biting/chewing less (after a soak and thorough drying with water and baking soda). Hopefully that'll help alleviate the itchiness he feels.
 
Blaze too....

Blaze is often after his paws...the front mostly...while laying on the sofa beside me at night...he starts nibbling the bottom and licking the top..I try to call his name to distract him and it works sometimes but he goes right back to it again; likewise when it just gently divert his head...like an elastic...back to it...

I thought it was environmental or perhaps food related allergies...I had spoken to the vet about it and although he nibbles a lot there is no hair loss nor does there appear to be any skin irritation. So not serious enough to involve medication of any kind.

I keep the hair trimmed between the pads in the summer and not often in our harsh winters I find it protects the pads a bit..when he isn't wearing his booties!
 
Problem isn't as severe as I feared. Vet looked over his paw. It looks a bit like a mess, but, so far, he's not really damaging the paw. It's not raw or hurting him. As we thought, the protein in his saliva is staining the fur around the foot pad, and discoloring the pad itself slightly. The vet doesn't think he needs a shot, at this stage. I'd have to be talked into that anyways.

Going to try Vanectyl. Vet still suggests Benadryl, but I'm not sure that's helping and I don't like the way it makes him sluggish and listless (slightly, not dramatic difference). Besides, not comfortable drugging my dog with a human medication for any length of time.

Weirdly, he seems to be scratching less than he did last week.
 
Glad it's not as bad as you thought. I'm still all for booties for outside walks.
Did the baking soda bath help a bit?

Not sure. It didn't do much for his mood, lol. He despises bath time.

Actually, he's still licking, but he's not licking anywhere near as much as he was. Only thing different is I discontinued the daily baker's yeast pills (I do give him Frontline, so the pills are either redundant or useless. I really doubt they help much. It just never occurred to me there would be any reason not to give them to him).

They checked him for a yeast infection and didn't find anything, but it still makes me wonder. Though I only stopped giving him the pills a few days ago. Not sure there would be a big change this quickly. Still, it's interesting.

I'm considering the booties, but... dunno. I'm fairly sure he'd fight me on it. so it might turn every walk into an ordeal. My wife bought him a sweater for winter walks - which we used maybe once because trying to get him in it is basically like trying to squeeze the toothpaste back in the tube. Quite an ordeal.
