itchy red paws and legs

I have noticed lately that Tekko has been really iching his feet and legs. I looked at his feet and legs and they are red and blotchy. I took him to the vet a few weeks ago for an itchy stomach and red blotchy spots and I was given an anti inflammatory with a mild steriod and the itchining stopped and the blotches are gone on his stomache however he's still itching his feet! I was doing research and it sounds like he has hot spots maybe related to an allergy? He sneezes some times. But then I was reading on the forum about Demodex and now I'm freaking out! Has anyone else expericed itchy feet? Right now I'm soaking his feet in cool water and plan on bathing him in diluted nizerol shampoo? Also can I get some advice on an immune supplement. I'm feeding Orijen grain free which is supposed to be top of the line but at this point I am so overwhelmed with the research out there on food I'm afraid I'm posioning my dog!!!! I'm responsible for this little guy and as a nurse I am extremely obsessed with health and maintaining a healthy family- that includes my fur baby!

Tully gets itchy feet from allergies - a lot of dogs in this area do. It seems to be from the grass at the oval. Tully gets allergy shots when its bad and sometimes I give her a hayfever tablet (1/4 of a human hayfever tablet without pseudoephedrine - like phenergan or polaramine).

Also the vet told me that when they lick their feet a lot from allergies, or the feet have been moist a bit, they can get a secondary infection just like athletes foot in humans. So I just put some human antifungal liquid on her feet (vets recommendation). In the warmer months I also bathe or wipe her feet after we have been on the grass.

Thanks -- Annie Laurie has been nibbling at her feet -- this may be just the ticket!

Word of advice - if you even think it's mange...get to the vet NOW. I thought my dog had allergies, and it turned out to be "hereditary mange". There's a few more names it goes by, I think. I have heard that when it makes its self known for the first time it either starts on the leg/chest area or face. This is a picture of my dog after battling it for almost a month now:

That picture shows his face after it's healed up some. I'm the type of person who freaks out over everything with my dog. Sometimes I take him to the vet only to find out that it wasn't anything at all. :uhoh: It's better to be safe than sorry. Here's what it looked like when it first began:

Even if it's not mange your dog has I'd still go to the vet just to be on the safe side. The longer you wait the worse it could get.

feet

Thanks Caro and Smudge. The pictures helped. I don't think it's mange. His feet are red and look more characteristic of athletes foot. I bathed him in diluted nizoral this morning and the redness has really gone down and the itching has decreased- not eliminated but decreased. I've made an appointment with the vet so we shall see :confused2:

my dogs get itchy paws as well around this time of year i just wash em with outmeal shampoo every so often if it gets really bad give em half a pill of benadryl. as per vet.

Years ago, when I had my first sheltie, Crystal, she kept getting red, bumpy feet, so I took her to the vet fairly often. At the age of 1 1/2 the vet said she was allergic to grass and put her on daily prednisone. She took predinisone until she died at the age of 15 1/2. Prednisone is not as dangerous for dogs as it is for humans. The Vet might try something else now--there are so many new drugs. Don't worry about what they prescribe, dogs are different from people

Good luck.

THANKYOU!!! I have been worried about Tully's allergy shots and I have a friend with a Bassett Griffon that also gets the allergy steroid shots and we both only get it irregularly because we have been worried about what it would do to them long term. But then I feel awful when she spends all night licking her itchy feet. Wish I had gotten her shot at the vet trip last week now.
