Itchy Skin

With dry skin you may not see flaky skin or red spots. Most of the time a vet will tell you that it's an allergic reaction. It probably is. I've proven it over and over to a lot of people that what they feed their dogs is what is causing their skin issues. Try a completely holistic food and not one from Iams or Science Diet because they use meat by products in their foods. Try to get one without wheat, wheat gluten, corn or corn gluten and add the omega 3, 6and 9 oils to his diet for 4 weeks and see if he improves.

Omega 3 is fish oils
Omega 6 is Flax seed oils
Omega 9 is Olive oils

Well, I spoke to the vet tech at my vet's office about the possibility of switching vet foods before taking her off of it entirely and the conversation did not go well (surprise surprise). My vet believes that taking her off of the vet food will cause all of her problems to come back. She also believes that if I put fish oil or any other type of oil on her food for her itching, even the vet food, that it will cause Sadie's diarrhea to come back. The tech seemed insulted when I suggested that Sadie's skin was dry because the food lacked something. I was insulted that she actually said to let Sadie itch, that since she didn't have any red or raw patches yet that it couldn't be that bad. I don't have raw patches but that doesn't mean that in the winter MY skin doesn't itch and drive me crazy!

I wholly disagree with my vet. Although the vet food definitely helped to cured what ever was wrong with her (despite extensive testing we never found out), I don't believe that Sadie has the 'sensitive digestive system' that the vet thinks she has. I've since started giving Sadie the odd treat, (my neighbor also likes giving her small bits of pepperoni occasionally), as well as a number of healthy people foods, such as fruits and veggies and she's had no problem with digestion. She's even gotten into my parent's sheltie's food and had no ill effects, which does not seem to me to be.

I started putting an Omega 3 oil on her food a week ago as well as gave her a bath and I noticed a difference immediately. Love the Mane and Tail Shampoo and Conditioner, they make her fur white, soft and shiny and since putting the oil on her fur I haven't seen her scratching once. I checked her skin and it no longer looks dry. Even the dry patch where her fur meets her nose is gone.

I'm going to give her a month of the oil on the vet food, just to be safe, before slowly trying to switch her to a holistic food.

I'm glad to see that the fish oil seems to be helping. Keep us posted on the new food if you switch her over. Good luck!

My sheltie Murphy has had similar issues, if fact he has broken open both of his elbows scratching at them. The first one was healed then he started on the second. However, I am inclined to think this is simply some allergy to something in the air, he used to have similar problems in the fall. My vet and breeder both recommended an antihistamine to use, it seems to help without making him very drowsy. Perhaps you should look into that possibility.

I hope she feels better soon. The fish oil sounds like a good bet too, I think I may give that a try as well.

Best Regards,

ShellTeeGuy :smile2:

If you do decide to switch foods, Eagle Pack do a Tuna, Salmon and Shrimp product (both kibble and tinned) specifically for dogs with sensitive skin and allergies and it has the additional omega oils. People here swear by it and I have noticed those dogs who switched spend less time scratching when they are playing at the oval. I live in a high allergy area and the oval in particular seems to set all the dogs off. (My two are not that keen on fish so I give them the duck Eagle Pack instead).

I was wondering...we give our boys pure salmon oil in their food 1x a day. Does Salmon oil have the same effect as regular "Fish" oil, or is there a difference in the kind of fish it comes from?
