It's elbow dysplasia

We saw the specialist today and got more x-rays. Deska has elbow dysplasia. However he has unusual growths and spurs so not exactly sure of the cause or impact. I was lucky it was quiet today so I ended up with a 3hr consult with the orthopedic specialist.

Atm the vet says keep up with his activity levels as that may be why he is only presenting with soreness at 3yrs (being so fit and healthy). He will go onto metacam and an essential oil supplement and lose some weight (although he said his weight is actually fine but losing some more will certainly help). He will probably slow down through weaves and over jumps in winter, but otherwise he can keep going with agility and have it monitored each year, flyball shouldnt be a problem for some time and he cleared him to run next weekend (phew).

I just want to cry - he is such an active boy and loves to run, I dont want to see him stiffen up and be in pain. When I save enough again (these visits have cost me a small fortune) we will to the physio for an exercise regime for arthritis.

In the meantime does any one have experience with elbow dysplasia and can give me some idea of what I can do to make life easier?

I'm so sorry to hear about Deska! I don't have any experience with dysplasia but if I hear of anything I'll pass it on. He is in great hands tho' and I'm sure you will be able to give him the highest quality of life through it all. (hugs)

I too am sorry to hear the diagnosis. At least he is still able to remain active, though I'm sure it's a small consolation. Thinking of you--and hope someone can chime in with some advice.

I am sorry to hear about Deska and I have no experiance with this but I am sure some one will be able to advise you.

No experience with this either. However, swimming certainly comes to mind, as and when you can find a place to do so.

Hmmm sounds like me... keep moving or I seize. Let him have fun and lots of pets, you have time to figure things out though so gather info and attempt to worry less :wink2:

At least now you know the source of Deska's discomfort, and can work on managing it. And, it's great news that for now, he can continue the sports he loves. I really don't know much about dysplasia, but am wondering if cold packs after running would help control inflamation and pain. I think Katherine's swimming suggestion might be a good one, too. Maybe Dr. Shelli will have some suggestions.

I am so very sorry to hear about Deska's elbow condition. Have you considered getting him on Vibrant Pets Joint and Muscle Supplement. It has worked wonders with my girls with joint issues. I know it would cost to ship it, but you could try a small jar and then, if you like it, order it in bulk (much cheaper). Think about it -- if it doesn't help, they'll refund you the cost, and you'd just be out the shipping.

So sorry to hear that Caro, but at least he can still do the things he loves. I have no direct experience but friends whose dogs have ED, they use various supplements (glucosamine, chrondritin) and also getting the dog to swim plenty is very beneficial as it builds muscle without putting weight on the joints.

Could you fit an inflatable paddling pool in your yard? Or is there a hydrotherapy centre near you?

Caro,
I would look into stretching and massage so you can do them every morning with your pup at home, really it is not complicated, you might want to have one visit to physio and then do on your own. Some basic books available on the subject. Willow bark herbal is helpful for anti inflammatory as it contains natural aspirin.
