Joint Supplements For Young Dogs

I know most vets in my area recommend Dasuquin for older dogs or dogs who have had an injury early in life, but my question is on a healthy puppy who you know is going to be competing in performance sports at the highest levels long term, at what age do you begin supplementation?

I'm trying to compare Cosequin to Dasuquin or if there's something else out there that is better, especially long term. If you can provide documentation/links, that would be most appreciative but I also welcome first hand experiences from performance sports handlers trialing with young dogs into their senior years.

I use Dasuquin w/ MSM for my older dogs. We see a difference in the formula without MSM. I have never used Cosequin, but have friends who do, with good results. Not sure about a younger dog, can only offer what In know from my experiences. We have good results, and our older dogs feel good, joints move easily....Good luck!

You shouldn't use joint supplements while a dog is still growing. I got a warning about this from the ortho vet when Deska was diagnosed with elbow dysplasia, there are also a few articles on it - I'll dig one up and post it in the morning (they're on my other computer). The thinking is that supplementing a dog while it's growing can contribute to growth problems - the over supply of those nutrients have to go somewhere. It's the same school of thought as dogs who are overweight as puppies are more likely to develop joint problems. I don't recall reading a specific age when it does become safe so maybe wait until they are older than 2yrs old.

I don't know about Dasuquin, but Cosequin has really helped F-kap's mobility. Almost two years ago before I discovered it he couldn't get up on his own on hard wood floors and could just barley get up on carpet by himself (I often had to help him up:(). After I first started giving him Cosequin he could actually jump up and run around on all floors. It started to stop working for after a while, so I added coconut oil. Together they have worked very well for the past few months. But again, it's starting to fail him. So sometime next month I'm going to switch him to Vibrant Pets Senior Compleat formula. I'm hoping this will keep him young and pain free through out the years.:fl I've also considered giving the other dogs the sport formula called Canine Athlete.

There are a plentiful amount of joint supplements on the market and most are marketed to mid-age to senior dogs. I am interested in learning at which age a puppy/young dog should be given these type of supplements baring it's a healthy dog with no prior injuries.

Caro - I look forward to reading the article.

Anyone else have documentation to share in regards to puppies and/or young dogs and supplementation?
