Jump Height

Reading Silaria's thread made me ask this question...what jump height does (or will) your dog jump in the event(s) you run?

(Speaking of Silaria's thread, go read it! I don't want to bump it to the bottom but was very curious about this question)

Bentley jumps 16" in USDAA.
Lexi will jump the same.

I am hoping Toffee will only have to jump 16" in Standard CPE (pretty much the only thing around here, plus Toffee has no papers, lol)

I have only done AKC and UKC so far. Justice is 15"" right on the dot. He jumps 16 in regular AKC and if I bring him back out 12" in prefered. UKC he was 14" I think if I ever show him again he is a senior so he can jump 8"

Ember is 13 3/8 and she jumps 12" and when I start her back out I think I'll maybe do prefered for awhile and then she'll jump 8". UKC she would jump 8". Diva is the same height as Ember.

Irene you don't need papers for Toffee. You can get a Canadian PEN # and if you venure down to the states an AKC PAL # then you can compete in CKC and AKC agility.

Since Bailey is under 14 inches, I assume she'll jump 12 inches?

what is preferred?

Preferred (in AKC) and Performance (in USDAA) allow you to run your dog at a lower jump height (one lower than the height at which they measure). There are a lot of different reasons for running in Preferred. For some, the dog is older, coming off an injury, or just close to the cut-off for height. Also, at least in USDAA, Performance allows more time to run the course, and there are no double or triple jumps.

For example, if Lexi measured at 16.01 inches, she would measure and have to jump 22" in Championship. Of course I wouldn't do that to her, so we would do Performance, and she would jump 16".

Randi, it depends on what venue you choose to do. If you ran USDAA and Championship, Bailey would measure at the 16" jump height.

Edan jumps 12 inches in:
  • CPE
  • TDAA
  • USDAA Performance (which is where I'm going to run him)

He jumps 16 inches in:
  • AKC
  • NADAC
  • USDAA Championship

His height, 14.5", puts him just above or just below most of the height cut offs.

I'm opting to run him in USDAA Performance because I'm not planning on really getting very involved in USDAA beyond the 2 trials a year my club hosts. So, with that being the case, I can't see making Edan jump higher and deal with a higher A-Frame for no reason. Why risk injury when I'm only doing it for ring time practice.

Prefered Std and Jumpers is a class in AKC. They run the same course as the regular dogs in Novice, Open Excellent but the dog can jump 4"(or one jump height) lower then they measure. They also get 5 more seconds of course time to work with. So if you don't want to jump your dog as high as they measure, the dogs is older, slower, or the handler needs more time you can still compete. The titles are seperate for regular so if you have an NA or NAJ like Justice and then ran prefered you have to start over in Novice and get the prefered titles.

Edit: Ashley beat me.

Gotcha. thanks for clarifying that for me! Bailey will have trouble jumping 16''. It will take a lot of training. She is not a jumper. She still doesn't jump on the bed. I'll try and run her in venues that measure her for 12'' jumps.

You could always do Preferred (AKC) and Performance (USDAA) where she would jump 12". Lots of people do that :)

Koji is pushing 18" so he's at the cut-off for many. Here's what he jumps:

NADAC: 16" (dog over 18" would jump 20" phew! just made it)
AKC: 16" (top of the range, just made this one too - 14-18")
CPE: 16" (same as AKC - middle of the road)
USDAA: 16" Preferred (Koji falls in the 16"+ to 21" for Championship, which puts him at 22". No way am I having him jump that, so he'll stay at 16" in Preferred)
