Jumping on door and barking aggressively when being let out

Well, I will try it, and see what Harley has to say about it. At least it did work on some dogs. We are going out of town in April and can't have him being crazy barking nuts at motel--they would not appreciate my little man like we do. Oh he has a new alias, little snow plow after the 15 inches of snow we got over weekend. He is not stopped at all, just puts down his head and snow plows thru it all, so funny, but at least it keeps him occupied and no barking when he is doing this--ha, ha just have to keep lots a snow around him!

Neighbours were getting ticked so she bought this thing that looks like a bird house. When the dogs bark it sets off a noise that only they can hear and they shut up immediately. OMG! I need one of those. Can you find out more about it? If nothing else, how to google it to find a store? Indy is a maniac outside - constantly patrolling the property agaist intruders...true sheltie instict, but misplaced in the city.....

No, Indy, the squirrels are NOT going to attack the herd.....and btw, Indy, you don't actually have a herd, unless you count Ryan and I! Silly boy!

Its one of those ultrasonic devices for deterring barking. We don't hear the sound, but dog's do. We've tried one on my parent's sheltie and on one of my shelties. After hearing it once or twice they ignored it and barked over the noise.

Just read the thread title, and thought 'That's April.' The meekest little girl turns into a 'power scratcher' at the door. Reading on to see what others suggest.
 
Can't believe we have almost had Harley 1 year. Little man is still barking at door, but not so bad--maybe we can wear him down little by little. He is slowly learning his role in the house although still skitish in certain situations. Has dec. that I am the momma and am a-ok, my husband is ok most of time and the cats are fun playmates. Strangers he will now stay in room right next to me, so improvement there. He knows his limits and is turning into a very good house dog. Can be loose during day in house and no problems (his toys get the work out!) Will become road dog with us in April, so will see how he does traveling. Glad I went with my gut instinct and got the little dog...He is big in spirit!
 
I too am having the same problem with Sherlock turning and attacking the door when he goes out. He will sit and wait for me to release him to go out, but hen turns and attacks. He also loves to set up a barking contest with the two dogs on the other side of the fence. We have him in obedience traning (8months old) and he is doing well but not when it comes to the door and the barking.
Does anyone know what this sonic deive is called or where you buy one?

The ultrasonic bird houses are available at amazon, they also come in an indoor variety. It works for my sound sensitive male but not my female.

With his attacking the door, I'd put him on a lead and lead him away from the door straight away, or hold on to his collar when he leaves the house so he can't turn around. It sounds like its become a bit of a habit that you need to break.

Barking at the dogs next door is going to be hard to stop. With adolescents my preference is to keep a short lead on them at all times. When he starts barking at next door lead him away, without saying anything, and put him in time out until he settles down. You might need to do this a lot to start with. Atm its great fun barking at next door, you want to make it no fun.
 
Harley

Have been away from this site for awhile, so thought I would update you on my nutty sheltie. Harley still does some barking--usually when first gets up and is excited to go out. He sometimes will jump on door once and bark awhile, then off he rushes to go potty and see what is up. He is soooo much better. Still shy and doesn't give kisses easy, but is my dog. Puts up with my husband, but isn't a dog that makes up to men very easy. He sleep next to my side of the bed and night and goes with us on road trips when we can take him. He likes to stay close, but just not a hugger or kisser. I fell on the 4th (on my 9 month old knee replacement). Oh I got the kisses then--I think he thought I was dead. I was ok--but really enjoyed the attention he gave me. My little laid back boy is healthy and at this point, that is all I care about. Kisses will come. Just thought I would let you know he has pretty much gotten over his aggressive barking and jumping--mostly cured it my turning my back and totally ignoring him. Guess shelties don't like that. HAHA.
