Vitamn E helps the immune system as well as being an anti-oxydant. Vitamin E is also an anti-inflammatory, helping to fight inflammation. As to dosage, I would speak with your vet. Fish oils also help fight inflammation (such as arthritis, etc.).
I don't like prednisone just for the fact that if it is given over long periods of time, there are associated risks and effects - one being weight gain. I had this with my Sheltie who had pancreatitis and was on prednisone for a couple of months on decreasing doses. It was so tough to get the weight back off because he was too sick at the beginning to exercise a lot. Prednisone is helpful when used correctly. I know they can be on it for a long while but it has to be monitored.
