I already feed Kia and Tasha the real food diet. I have been reading labels and not buying any item that says By-products, or doesn't mention real food items. They are fed Merricks, freeze dried meats, even their treats must have no by-products, bone meal, corn, anything that is not an actual food product. It takes a little more time at first then you get to know which products are best. I buy my foods for the furkids at Agway, but only the one in Haverhill, :wink2:the one in Littleton doesn't carry the real foods when we asked him why he answered that it's not natural for dogs to eat fruit and veggies. :lol:Boy does he have to learn. so our business goes elsewhere. Great post. People should read up on dog food as much as they do (or should) on the dog breeds when trying to pick one out.
According to my research, good foods include:
Evo, Taste of the Wild, Canidae, and Wellness.

And bad foods include:
Purina, Iams, etc.


I feed Diamond right now. Not the best dog food in the world (it has corn and grains in it and by-products), but it's better than what I was feeding before.
 
That article makes me proud to be a Gator and live in Gainesville. While I don't really have the time or money to feed and prepare raw food, I feed Ripely Innova (not Evo) dry kibble. It's pretty much the best I can find from a company that hasn't had any recalls or issues with suspicious rendering plants. I was feeding Merrick until I read a message board where various people said that they tried calling the Merrick plant and that sometimes they would answer as a dog food manufacturer and other times as a rendering plant that offers to pick up your dead animals. While they're ingredient list looks wonderful and the first ingredient is supposedly organic chicken, that little bit of news just made me distrust them entirely. So far I've come to the conclusion that all dog food sucks. At least the University of Florida is trying to make people realize that. GO GATORS!!!
 
I feed James Wellbeloved for breakfast and lunch and he gets a raw chicken wing for dinner. I am moving him slowly onto full time natural diet, just taking it slowly at the moment.
 
Whats in it

Sunchaser I beg to disagree with some of what you've said,but there is a handfull of dog food companies that have a very top quality kibble.To name a few,Evo,Enova,Halo,Canadie,Wellness, which I feed my Dolly,Blue Buffalo,Flint River Ranch. Not all foods have by-products or corn,gluten. Don't try to scare everybody,because there are some very good products out there.Have had shelties for about forty years. There are some bad foods out such as Ol Roy,Purina,Iams,Science Diet.Just remember to learn to read labels.

I personally think that we are getting far too anal in what we feed our dogs.

I personally never feed my dog table scraps and don't necessarily scrimp on the dog food that I feed. I feed him on what he does well on.

My breeder recommended Purina Pro Plan and that is what I feed. Bacca is extremely healthy, high energy, a beautiful silky coat and healthy stools. I think we get far to caught up in reading the labels in our dog food! Do you read the labels so much on the food that YOU eat?

Enough, already. Find a decent food, transition your pup to it gradually. If he does well with it, then stick with it. If not, then try another. But this debate as to holistic or natural feed is wearing me down.

My parents fed their dogs on the cheapest dog food going for years and still do. And they did just fine. They have a 14 year old lab mix that still thrives and he is eating your basic Dog Chow!
 
I agree and disagree. I'm new to raw and previously fed Purina Pro Plan. My dogs did fine on it and I was very happy...until they changed the formula. I first looked into raw because the cost of kibble kept rising, the size of the bags kept getting smaller, and the recalls were more than I could keep up with! I decided that I needed to know what was going in to their bodies and needed to have better control. It was after my decision that I found the other benefits and have learned so much about it.

I do agree that dogs do okay on kibble just as we humans do okay on processed/boxes/packaged food. But just as the dogs do great on raw, we humans do better on lots of clean grown veggies and foods without all of the preservatives.

I, personally, am able to feed them a raw diet for less than the cost of the Purina (which is cheaper than a natural food!) and I know much more what I am giving them which makes me happy :wink2:
 
Well, I disagree and am sorry to hear that this is 'wearing' on people. I personally feed raw. I try hard to eat as much raw unprocessed, organic foods myself. As a society I don't think we are doing well with eating processed, boxed foods. Yes, we are living, but our quality is going down. We take more meds than ever before in history, and diseases are rising, not going down. And new ones are popping up all the time. I am not saying that we all have to eat like this nor do our dogs, but we should be able to write and discuss our view points. If someone does not like it, then they do not have to read that thread. I am fairly new to feeding raw, so I appreciate that I can get information here from others.
I like what GeeRome wrote in one of her posts. To paraphrase, my dogs don't have a choice on what they get to eat, they have to eat what I put in front of them, so I want to make the best choice possible for them. I get to choose what I eat or don't, they don't have that luxury.
I really like this forum, so I do hope that we can all agree to disagree on some topics, and that's OK. We all have one thing in common: and that is that we LOVE our furkids.
 
Raw Diet

Everyone has to do what is right for them.My girlfriend Cindy raises Golden's and that is all she feeds is Raw. She feeds and sells the Bravo. Her dogs do well on it and I house sat for her recently and forgot Shadow's food so fed him the raw and he liked it okay.I don't think I could afford to feed the raw so I stick with the kibble and feed Solid Gold Lamb and Rice and mix it with Flint River.Also my friend Cindy feeds her cat raw and they love it.Also she buys tons fo chicken frames from a chicken farmer.She pays like 40 cents a piece for them and she has a few freezers .She has alot of people that buy raw from her.Enough said.
