Language of the Ears

One of the endearing things about Shelties is how fast they learn our words.. I mean we have even had trouble spelling words so as not to evoke a response and some times that didn't even work. The word Treat is a game changer, when we ask where is the cat both dogs start looking for the cat..was it a border collie who knew the names of 100 of his toys and could pick them out of a piles of toys and recently read of a dog who knew 1100 nouns had just died... I wonder how many of us know dog bark language as well and who is the smarter??

It was a female border collie who knew the 100+ names of toys and would find them in a pile.... her name escapes me now. Funny you say they know "Where is the cat", mine knew that, plus. "Where is the bunny?" who escaped occasionally from his fenced in yard.

I think they know a lot more than we count on! Most people don't spend the intense amount of time and effort to cultivate that kind of shared vocabulary with their dogs.

Just the other day I was watching tv and had all 3 dogs around me. All of a sudden it stunk and I said “Who farted”……Piper got up and left the room

Sheltie guilt they sometimes do give themselves away... sort of like when you find a pees spot on the rug and say "who did this?" and the guilty one leaves the room
