Liam was BAD!!!!

Ok, I decided to run out to drop my taxes off only to come home to something white on the floor. I picked it up to realize Liam had been chewing on my Kiehl's #1 lip balm! It is in a tube and nothing was left in it! Now I am in panic mode reading all the ingredients... it contains Isopropyl!

This toxic chemical is easily absorbed through the skin, and in large enough amounts it's poisonous to pets. ... Symptoms of poisoning begin within 30 minutes of ingestion, and if left untreated, they can be fatal.

I called a local vet that was opened and they recommended calling the Emergency Vets office. When I called to explain the situation she said to immediately give him 2-1/2 teaspoons on Hydrogen Peroxide to induce him to vomit and call AKC Poison Control! Luckily I had a syringe to administer it to him. Within one minute he was throwing up.

When I got through to the Poison Control they had the product listed. She said with his weight and the small level he ingested it would not be fatal so I would not need to rush him to the emergency. She confirmed with the primary vet on staff and between his weight 27lbs and .5 fl oz, he ingested he should be OK.

What a scare! I will NEVER leave that sitting on my side table ever again! She explained to watch him make sure he does not throw up more than 2 more times. If he does off to the Emergency Vet I go! He may have an upset tummy for a day which should resolve. If it lasts for more than 12 hours I need to see a vet.

OK - I had to vent! He has been SO Good for So Long! Now, this... Wasn't going to have a glass of wine tonight... But, now I will! Need to calm down!

Gloria, if it is any consolation at all, Elijah is almost 3 now and he would do the SAME. We left them in the den a few nights ago when we went to the movies and came home to a file folder taken from the bookshelf and chewed up. Even if we leave them with Kongs he will find something.

Gosh I wouldn't have thought there was anything that bad in a tube of lip balm! Makes you wonder if we should be using it at all!!! Good thing you were right on top of it. Few more gray hairs for you, though. Hope Liam feels OK by the morning. I've had to give hydrogen peroxide more than once! At least we have that handy to give in an emergency. Hope you can calm down a bit now that it's over......

Uh Oh...when I saw the heading I thought what did Liam do now?

Bad bad boy Liam...bad bad boy!
It's always the littlest things that we forget about! Who knew that a little tube of balm he'd want to eat? So glad you didn't have to rush him to the vet!

Yes, it is a bit more of a consolation actually! Liam is always left with Kong’s, toys, and Baron and Beau to play with!

I thought the same thing... why does something toxic to dogs end up in a lip balm. Then again, how do these products end up in peanut butter and chewing gum too!

Glad to hear Liam is doing better. You too. Every time we leave the house, we sweep every room Zulu has access to, just to be sure we did not leave anything that he can get a hold of. If it is new, and in his reach, it must be investigated, and either ignored, destroyed, or eaten. He will soon be 6, and we still have to keep a close eye on that boy!

Glad Liam is okay! Sometimes you just gotta wonder why? Like, it doesn't smell all that good, vaseline substances don't taste very good, so why?

I always keep hydrogen peroxide on hand. I had to dose Brodie just Saturday night. I fell asleep on the couch in my robe and pjs with him cuddling me and woke up to the tie from my robe gone - chewed off. The boy LOVES string! He sneaks my shoes out of the closet while I am showering and chews the laces. Sneakers have to be kept behind closed doors and yes, I now have a stash of replacement laces. He will chew jacket straps, boot straps....

So anyway, I measured the other tie and it was 20 inches and I was left with about an inch stub meaning he ingested 19 inches of my tie from my robe! He got dosed, he barfed it all up within minutes. Yes, I dug through the undigested barf, picked out the pieces, laid them out and measured or he would have received a second dose. Thankfully, he chewed it up and swallowed in pieces, they most likely would have made it out fine with the size they were, but goodness, what a disaster if he had swallowed whole!

For the record, it supposedly takes about 4 hours for something to make its way past the stomach. And you can dose 2 times with hydrogen peroxide if needed but if what you are looking for does not come up or vomiting is not induced or you see signs of poisoning or intestinal discomfort, your pet should be rushed to an emergency vet.
