Lily Is Hardheaded!

Lily is 9 months old and is still not completely potty trained. I am so frustrated! I know this! is more my fault then hers since I haven't kept her in the xpen or her kennel. During the day and when I am work she spends the day on the bed with the other two fur babies. (My husband is at home with them.) He says they never make a peep and he lets them out several times through out the day. All is well and not piddles or poops in the house. The trouble is when I am at home, evenings and weekends. They are still let outside every couple of hours or if one of them barks to go out. (Lily is always silent). When she does do her duty outside we have always had a "party" in recognition.
Last night when I discovered both pee and poop in the bedroom I said she was to be confined to the kennel. Hubby, the softie, doesn't want to do this since this behavior doesn't happen on his watch (when I am at work). So I thought I would start attaching her to me with a six foot leash. So the my fellow Sheltie Forum Friends I would appreciate your comments regarding this.
Also would like to mention I have never had a chewer like her, bedding, clothes, and the bathroom wall. We have patched the bedding and the walls and noticed there are new holes AGAIN. We have even sprayed the wall with the bitter stuff and that doesn't work. She has plenty of toys to play with and occupy herself (destroyed most of them.) HELP.
 
I like the crate/pen/baby gate/leash concept until the dog is 100% trustworthy. My hubby hates it too but left the puppy-rearing to me and we very solidly potty-trained and avoided the chewing stage.

My view is never trust them -- until you can trust them!

Be consistent and pay attention to the matter for benefit in the long run.
 
Sounds about right, have a shadow with you at all times. I don't tether my dogs to me, but Ruutu follows us if we decide to move from the living room. And if he goes into the kitchen without me, I tell him to get his booty back in the living room. He tends to cause chaos in the kitchen (knocks over the trash can, chews the walls) As far as the chewing, the bitter stuff has never worked for any of my shelties. Instead, we use hot sauce. Ironically, I think Ruutu likes that too, but it makes him stop at least for a while. When I catch him chewing, I give him a chewie instead.
 
This chew the walls thing amazes me. I hear it a lot and I have never had one chew walls, carpet, furniture. Quasar chewed shoelaces, shoes, and books (including a Bible), but not actually the house itself. Watch, my next one will do everything I have never had and drive me nuts!

:lol: Just wait. One of our shelties would take staples out of carpets.. She did it from a baby. Needless to say, she got returned to my parents (they were the breeders of her) and we kept her. Lots and lots of staples out of carpet were taken out. She LOVED metal. Zippers went bye bye too.

Lol, you should have seen Cadbury at his height. We ended up replastering the kitchen wall because he had chewed it back to the mesh over the breeze blocks. He also consumed most of the door frame which we have fixed with more copious amounts of filler and painted over. Funnily he was also a pain to house-train. He was still having accidents (anxiety related) until Merlin was about 6 months. I think Merlin gave him confidence so we never had any more.
 
Since this only is a problem when I am in the house I wonder if she isn't doing this as an attention getter? Well she sure will have my undivided attention when she is leashed to me! I have to buy a new leash since she has chewed the three that we had. Should I make this one chain?
 
Sounds just like Shelby! The only thing was Shelby was so sneaky she would never get caught in the act! We would and still do crate her. She even chewed the walls through the crate.

Shelby's thing is wood. Anything wood was the thing to chew, furniture, base molding, etc. even to this day she will take a piece of wood off the wood pile and chomp away. She even knows where to find the one tiny piece of base molding at my in-laws that my FIL never nailed to the wall.

She was also difficult to house train if that means anything.

However she has now fully gained my trust and she no longer chews anything she shouldn't.
 
Crate! Crate training, in my experience, is the best. Tell your husband to crate her wherever he is at, she doesn't have to be alone. When Cookie was a puppy, I crated him for small periods of time (an hour or so) and when I let him out, we went potty immediately. He slept in his crate (still does by his choice) and as soon as I let him out in the morning, potty. Crated him after meals, 20 min later we would go potty. Crated him when we went out for dinner or whatever, soon as I let him out, potty. Soon enough he got to the point where all potties were outside and he began to only want to go outside.
 
I wonder if crate/baby gate/ leash training still works for an adult dog too? I adopted a 6 year old 2 months ago - not house broken at that time so I crated him. He has improved a bit and got the idea of not peeing inside the house. So I no longer crate/ leash him except during bed time. But when he gets excited during play or for some reasons drinks more than usual, he just can't hold it. After 10 days of accident-free, he had 2 accidents today. Very frustrated!
