Little Buggs Can't Ride

My little tri-color Bugsy has begun to throw up when we ride him with us. Even though it may be several hours after a meal, this poor little fella just can't seem to keep it down.:no: His meals are home cooked without any oils. And, he refuses to drink water for a while afterwards. We have him in the rear seat and stop regularly to try to get him to walk around, but to no avail. I appreciate any input before we get him to a vet. I know just as soon as we get to the vet there will probably be more drugs.:rolleyes2:
 
Deska gets sick in the car as well. I give him Phenergan if we are taking longer rides. But I have found he is better on shorter rides now I have a car hammock on the back seat. I think he is more stable standing then. He also has Tully's crate to lean on in the back seat. I just think the extra stability must be helping with his motion sickness.
 
Sorry to hear Bugsy is suffering from motion sickness, that is a miserable thing. Do you think it would help if you could boost him up so he could see out of the window? People with motion sickness are usually better if they can see outside (well at least that works with my mum).
 
We've had many different dogs that suffered from motion sickness. It's a miserable experience, as any person who suffers from it can tell you. We've used a few medications... all worked, but usually made the dog drowsy for a while. Our sufferers had car sickness from day one & never really outgrew it. Right now, we're blessed to have two dogs with cast iron stomachs & a love for riding.

Clancy and Abby both would get car sick when puppies...
I was told be a pet store lady to try a teaspoon of sugar a half hour before a car ride...I have no clue why it works..but worked for him...plus I took him every day for a short ride..started with just sitting in the car for a bit..and working up to maybe a jaunt around the block..until I could actually go some place..
Abby doesn't get sick any more..but she prefers to lay on the floor of the back seat..seeing the scenery zooming be fast, seems to bother her...

Theres a bunch of things you can try..ginger, and theres some over the counter stuff too...call your vets office..they can give you some other suggestions..

Poor little Bugsy!

My first Sheltie would have been okay in the car had it not been for my GSD. My GSD could never stand a car ride unless it was 5 minutes. She's start to drool heavily then heave. The poor Sheltie probably got sick from watching her.

Perhaps acclimate him with 5 minutes rides than gradually lengthen them. Avoid curves. :biggrin2:
 
I heard that you should give them some ginger snap cookies to eat, before you take the ride. I am not sure how much validity there is to this.....but it probably wouldn't hurt to try!

Actually, they tell people who suffer from seasickness on cruises to take Ginger, so this might help! There are several homeopaths you can try too...Google canine carsickness online and you'll find them. It's not unusual at all for dogs to get this. Several of ours have suffered from it. Some grow out of it and some do not. Good luck!

I found that my pups do better in the car when they are in a crate. I suspect its because they aren't getting jounced around as much as loose in the back seat. Plus the security of being in their "safe" place helps as well.

Now that I've got the two, travelling with two crates is impossible, so from time to time, I have to deal with an ooopsies in the backseat. Fortunately, I've got a rear seat hammock so clean up is a breeze.
 
Sick of the ride

You know, it's amazing the differences. Sage was in my lap under the wheel before he was 7 weeks. His true loves were squirrel hunting and riding. I could just hint "truck" and his poor hips would hobble as fast as his fat tummy would let them. He never was sick. I never had a hint of him throwing up. Meddi has never thrown up. I just think Buggs has an ill developed "something" inside. And, maybe some of your tricks may work. I hesitate going to the vet and geting more drugs for my babies. But, I certainly will if it is necessary.
