Looking for a good groomer in my area.

Hi guys I am getting a puppy soon and I never found a good groomer in my area before so I thought I would ask around. I live around the Galveston-Texas City Area of Texas. Anybody on here got any ideas or recommendations?:fl
 
I would suggest that you try to find a groomer who is NDGAA Certified. If you go to their website (NDGAA.com) there are drop down menus on the top. If you go to the first choice labeled "NDGAA" there will be an option of "Locate NDGAA Registered Groomers" and you can do a search in your state and see if anyone is around you. If not, you could try calling the closest groomer to you on that list and ask if there are any shops they would recommend to you.

Good luck with your search and make sure to be VERY specific with your instructions to your new groomer!
 
I tried to search for groomers that way just now, and the search results were just HTML code and javascript. I'm not sure what happened to the page, but it's not very helpful unless you can read HTML! It might be my browser, idk. I'm using firefox.

Edit- Working in IE *grumble*
 
I don't know about the US, but in Canada there is no required certification to be able to call yourself a groomer.

Best approach is by word of mouth and references. I approaching a new groomer, ask to see his/her portfolio.

And best of all, buy a copy of The Illustrated Guide to Sheltie Grooming by Barb Ross. It does not mean you have to do the grooming yourself, but at least you will be educated enough to know what to ask for from a potential grooming.

Speaking from bad grooming experience here......
 
You could also ask if it would be okay if you dropped by when the groomer was doing a sheltie. If they have a problem with that - keep looking.
 
We just moved to a new town and got a new vet. I asked the vet tech for a groomer recommendation. She told me and said that almost everyone that worked at the vet clinic took their animals there.
 
Contact your local Sheltie club to ask if any breeders or handlers in the area groom on the side, many do. I find that Sheltie people tend to not hack up shelties like school-taught groomers (sorry if there are any of those on this list, but they teach Shelties like Goldens, trimming EVERYTHING)
