I discovered this site a few months ago, and I'm so glad I did. It makes me smile every single day.
I love all dogs, but collies have always been my passion. I got my first when I was two months old and my last one died several years ago. There were six in all between the ones my parents owned and the ones I got after leaving home. Following the last collie, a border collie came into our lives and she is the most incredible dog. So, so smart. As in I talk to her like a person and she understands me. She's also the most low maintenance dog I've ever known. Odd for a border, I know. Being a collie fanatic, I've always had FITS over shelties. Tiny collies in appearance, I always wanted one and fate just never intervened as all of my animals since I left home have been rescues. Then several months ago I discovered Luckie. She was a year old and she was living in deplorable conditions. I took one look at her and knew that her owner was going to give her to me or I was going to make her disappear, but she was MINE the moment I saw her.
She came home with me, and has absolutely taken over my home and my heart. I could cry just thinking about her. This is a dog who was never socialized, never taken into a home, never seen a vet, who had been living in a tiny kennel in her own feces. Next to a PIG. I'm not kidding. A pig. Anyway,
that little princess cleaned up beautifully and came into this house just knowing
she belonged. With amazingly little effort she was housentrained. We may
have had five accidents total. She and my border collie have become best
friends, and she's given Trixie a new lease on life. At eight, Trixie is more
energetic than ever and we joke that she's lost five pounds on the Luckie
workout plan. Luckie has learned to enjoy her walks, and is still working on
trusting my kids. They adore her but their energy makes her nervous. We'll
get there, though.
So.....that's the LONG story on what led me here. In the early days I was so concerned about some of her nervous behaviors, and in my research I found this site. Collies will always be my first love, but, wow, these shelties are right at the top of my list alongside their bigger cousins. Love, love, love this baby
girl of mine.
Now.....if any of you have a magic cure for the incessant barking that these little stinkers are so guilty of, do tell. Have MERCY!!!! With my collies, I could
at least shush them and they would be quiet for a while. Not this gal! Lol! It's as if she starts and can't stop if she wants to.
Happy to be a sheltie mom after all these years! And I have no idea what's happened to this post with the choppiness? I tried to fix it and can't. Maybe it's that I'm on an iPad??
