MacGreggor Gets Car Sick

A few of ours are carsick and the best thing we have found is a tablet called Sealegs, there might be an american version. Its the only thing we have found that is really effective but doesn't make them totally drowsy (we go to shows so we need them awake at the end of the trip).

Also, do you use a crate? They really do help a lot in the car, makes the dog feel more secure. They also get their favourite bone to chew for the journey to keep their minds occupied.
 
We've been having the exact same problem with our new little pup Woody who is now 13 weeks. We solved it by not feeding him at least 4 hours prior to car travel. Worked a treat. Another thing we did is - because car sickness is also related to anxiety - we tried to reduce car-related anxiety by feeding him in there when we're at home (the car is stationary) and then going back inside. Now with a positive association with the car, and no full tummies on car rides any longer, Woody is 100% free of car-sickness. Hope this helps!
 
Georgia was a regular vomit queen on car journeys. We always put her in a crate as we thought this would help her feel more secure and also keep the mess contained. I don't think her car sickness was really to do with motion, but more to do with being anxious. If we even took her near the car she would start to drool. We have tried some herbal anti anxiety stuff that we got from our vet. We gave it to her on a trip to Idaho and it seemed to help, certainly reduced the drooling a lot.

I remember having a conversation with a fellow sheltie owner on a dog walk a few months ago and she just said that she will grow out of it and to just keep putting her in the car. Was a bit skeptical really. However, we are just about to hit the year old mark and after many car trips without any meds, she seems to just drool a bit. We actually ditched the crate and she now wears a car harness and sits on the back seat with the kids. Wasn't sure how this would go, but once the kids left her alone, it seemed to work out OK. We always have a towel and some kitchen towel in the car though ;)

I suppose it the age old 'these things will pass' moments.
 
We adopted our Bentley at 1.5 years old. He'd get sick every single time he rode in the car, even on short trips. Made taking him places a royal pain. Then we started agility training with him and our Zoey when he was about 4.5 years old. Each trip was 15-20 minutes each way. It was about three months into training with them that we noticed something - he wasn't getting sick any longer! I don't know whether it was because he so looked forward to going to agility class, or just got desensitized, but now we can take him for hour long rides and he handles them just fine.

I wish I could offer you a magic fix, but perhaps just sitting in the car at first with a treat, then turning the car on and going around the block, then increasing the distance - all the time making it fun. Most importantly you need to feel relaxed and not stressed. I so believe that our dogs can pick up on our emotions.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. We have tried putting him the car and not starting it and giving him a treat; he spit the treat out and drooled like a Saint Bernard!

When we went to the Vet for his last set of puppy shots I asked for suggestions, he said try childrens benedryl. Last night we tried it and it seemed to help. He drooled alittle and didn't hurl so that certainly a step in the right direction.

When my LB was 8 weeks old he threw up on his very first ride home with me. He continued to get car sick for his first 6-8 months. I thought he'd never outgrow it. And we're not talking just vomit-I'm talking diahrea too. The vet suggested Benadryl. It didn't work all that well, and LB eventually outgrew his episodes. He's 15 months old now and lives traveling. Wish I'd heard about Cerennia before! Next puppy :wink2:
 
Woody had a car sickness relapse recently - so on the next trip, we gave him a pig's ear ( so much more exciting than any other treats) and it worked amazingly. He gnawed on it all the way to my partners house and back without even realising he was in the car!
