Magical world of lethal Whites

I often take time,and keep up with a group on FaceBook.It is called the Magical World of Lethal Whites.

So I was reading a story about a pup,whose name was Possum. She had come from a breeder in Texas,that knowingly knew the differance,but bred 2 merles just the same. Possum lived nearly a year with her loving family.

She was seemingly a happy puppy,enjoyed life,and even had a love for agility. But something happened with Possum,something clicked one night,and her owner was attacked and bitten and gashed her owners eyelid.Thank heavens nothing more.

It was decided to let Possum free,to enjoy life without fear.She was euthanized Nov.15 2008.

So as I have sat here,I wonder..I would not want this to happen to Mia,her brother.I feel we have come so far with her,and my hope is for her to continue.

But I guess I have to wonder,how scared she must feel at times.Maybe not so much now,but what could happen if she was so scared,that something like this could happen.What could even possibly trigger the change,to feel the need to bite or harm someone.

So much to learn,as we want to do every thing right,so she does feel safe.Just something to ponder,as I guess it is something every deaf or blind/or both..dog has to be able to trust and know the differance.

Sorry for the ramble,but Brian & I have a whole new perspective on these dogs,and we can only pray the breeding practices stop of breeding merle to merle.

I had no idea this was so hurtful. Is this what is referred to as a double merle?

This is a very sad story. Are they deaf, blind, both? Very unfortunate :(
 
awww so sad, but I often wonder too if it comes from a less than ethical person is it also possible that it wasnt just fear but maybe something loose upstairs that just clicked? I have seen it in seeing and hearing dogs, they are relatively fine no warning and bam something just short circuits in their head. Either way its scary for both the owner and dog.:no:
 
Truly a sad story. I wonder what triggered that behavior. A touch that was not expected, a loud noise, something fell. Poor baby, and I feel for the owners, trying so hard to give him a good life, then to have this happen.
 
Its really a sad story, poor little dog didnt really have a chance. Dont fret about Mia you are giving her the best life she could have and that's all you can do.
 
A white dog? A blind dog? A deaf dog? Why narrow it down to this dog? Any creature can do this. Humans do it. The nicest guy down the street on Monday can snap and kill their whole family on Tuesday...and they also are sometimes euthanized. It is harder on a blind or deaf creature because it is hard to know what is going on around you ( I know this for a fact) but do you take away this life just because "you" can't understand what happened? Try to understand what it is like to be blind or deaf or both rather than take the easy way out...they are different, so their brain must be screwed up, so let's just get rid of them. Do you execute blind humans, deaf humans, mentally challenged humans? Do you keep these challenged creatures away from "NORMAL" creatures? If they react possibly out of fear, as we humans do quite often why not try to comfort them and reassure them that they have nothing to fear and that they are loved. As my eyes have been opened I am sorry to say that I am finding that humans are a sad group...a sad, sad group

That was our reaction when we both read the story,as well David.Makes one wonder though,why the ultimate decision to euthanize for the owner was the answer.
Do I personally agree,no I don't. This has hit home with you,I can tell.And I apologize for that.
 
What a sad story and Possum looked lovely in the photographs. :sadsmile:I wholeheartedly agree that the deliberate mating of merle to merle should be banned. I know many times it does not result in lethal whites but why take the risk of the possibility of producing a puppy which is blind and/or deaf if it can be avoided? Our KC in England will not now register any puppy born from such a mating which I think is a very positive step. I think it's good there is a support group on facebook for people with these special dogs.
