Monty is coughing/choking almost none stop

Everyone keeps forgetting this was the ONLY vet open. Everyone else bailed. So right there better job. Oh and the vet was likely VERY overloaded with normal patients and all the others. Then add in challenging working conditions and no telling impacts on staff.

It is far easier to critique than do ;)

Agreed to a point, Sheep. Having worked for a vet for 3 years and then in a human hospital for 21 years I can tell you they screwed up. If they were flailing that badly for the right diagnosis they should have called the specialist sooner, for instance.

Gloria I will certainly pass them on as requested Barron, Beau and Liam :hugs

Thanks for the article Sandy, it was an interesting read and great idea on trying to discuss or views once all this has calmed down.

I can give him a little boiled Chicken (he doesn't eat rice for some reason haha) so hopefully it will help. He didn't eat at home yesterday but I think that's all down to everything he has just been through. it seems to be the medication and stress that made him a little sick, we'll get through it. The sick dog in the night thing is hard, you can hear every little noise so just HAVE TO get up and make sure he's ok lol. I've argued a little about all the different diagnosis today. The answer is that the specialist is only available Monday to Friday and by the time they realised they didn't have a clue it was Saturday so they worked on "most likely" until they could get it reviewed by him. I'm still pretty angry because it's all fresh and I nearly lost my little ball of trouble so I'll let it all calm down before I discuss any of it with them again. I can kind of see both sides but because it was Monty it makes it harder to accept anything.

Poor Monty, poor you for not getting any sleep again! Is he on medication at home or is he still on IV meds? He'll get stronger everyday and will be back to his mischievous self in no time Darren. Does he have to stay overnight at the vet today or will he be back at home tonight?
Hopefully you can get a bit of rest today Darren, this has been such a stressful time for you.:hugs

He's on both at the minute, I have medication to give him at home and then they are doing things with his fluids during the day. As long as he doesn't start going backwards I can take him home at night but back to hospital all day for fluids, scan, tests and working oh his breathing.

I agree that the important thing now is to get Monty better...the time to discuss failures is once this is over and he's home and healed. Save your energy and strength for taking care of him; he'll feel your frustration and anger. I don't blame you a bit, and it's easy for people to say let it go, but not when it's YOUR dog! I've been there and I know that for sure. I'm glad you asked the questions you did but above all, I'm glad a specialist is treating him now.

If Monty won't eat rice, you can try some of the baby cereal flakes that you can rehydrate with some of his milk and mix with chicken. It comes in rice or oatmeal too if he'd eat that. It looks like this.

Hang in there, Darren. You and Monty have been through the wringer. Take care of you too, and concentrate on just getting him better. :hugs

POOR LITTLE MONTY!! I hope he feels better soon!!

You can use anything that's basically 'white'. I know from my own surgeries. So oatmeal, pasta or white potatoes are all an alternative if he doesn't like rice. You can even use rice bubbles if you're desperate (keep in mind it does have sugar), Tully gets cornflakes! We do white fish and white potato (and choko if in season) as the easy to digest diet because Tully is allergic to chicken and it's too cruel to give it to the others.

Thank you for the suggestions Caro, Chris! I apreciate it :)

How's Monty doing today Darren? Did he have a better night last night?

Thanks for checking in Lisa, it has been Monty overload for you all lately so I was going to give you at least a day off lol.
His coughing is worse at night which gets me nervous but I'm assured he's doing ok and well on the road to recovery. His treatment has gone well and tomorrow will hopefully be his last full day in hospital so it'll be homecare and twice a week checkups. It looks like he has a ways to go but he is moving a little and is back to carry Broccoli outside for pee's which always brings a smile
