More info about cryptic blues?

Thanks everyone, that really explains a lot. I'm a LOT less confused now :)

So if I ever had a cryptic merle (which I don't right now), I could show it but it would probably be best to only breed it to a tri or bi black, just to be safe, right?

Correct! Cryptic or minimal Merle dogs are still merles (just as much as a fully blue dog!) genetically. So they should never be bred to another Merle dog as it could produce double Merles.

And FYI, a minimally merled dog still would need to be registered and shown as a merle.
 
My puppy Jesse is a cryptic merle. He looks like a tri, but has a couple spots of blue in his eyes and if you part the fur on his rump you can see some small spots of merle.
