Mouthing

Rico has been very mouthy recently, and I think it's partially because he wants to play and also because he's teething!

But he also tries to mouth our feet (or at least mine), when we're walking, and at first I thought it was his herding instinct, but I read that shelties nip the heel instead of the front part of the foot, or toes. It is a little irritating, having to stop the little croc from biting down each time we walk. It is painful too, and I have tried to say "No" firmly, but he refuses to listen and continues >:( I think it's because he's a little too excited!

But when I sit down sometimes, he likes to pounce on me and try to mouth my hand. I tried directing his attention to a toy, and he does use the toy instead, but sometimes he rejects the toy and continues to try to mouth me. I think he's trying to play, because he does that when he's happy and excited.

Is there any other way to stop this behaviour? I'm trying to stop him from biting my feet and my hands because I hope he won't do this to visitors and me hahaha.

When my puppies were mouthy, I would scream "ouch" really loud and shrieky like they really hurt me very badly. After a few times of this, they stopped. Not sure that this works for every dog, but for us it did.

That's what I did and it worked for Bailey. I only had to scream "Ow!" once and she understood. She tried it again when she teething. I did same thing and that was it.
