Moving to somewhere really cold

rofl.. I'm in alaska but Mally's Mom asked about the weather in the Shetland Islands so I googled it :)

Our little pups great-great-great-great-grandparents had hard lives!
 
Barb Bag balm and than you can "try" putting on toddler socks to stop them from licking it...although than they just go for the socks..:rolleyes2:

Yes, I'm guessing the socks would last about 30 seconds! Fortunately, it wasn't a huge issue for me last year. Perhaps ditto this year!

Olimpia, I too moved from Florida to the great frozen north. Just temporarily, while I care for my aging parents, but none-the-less I am here. Inasmuch as Meggie was born in FL and had never experienced the cold, I contacted her breeder to ask about a coat, boots, etc. She chuckled! She originally bred dogs in Michigan and she said Meggie would do "quite well" in the snow. She was certainly right! Meggie loves the snow and doesn't appears to have any problem with the cold. She'll stay out there as long as I let her and runs and plays and eats poopcicles to her hearts content!!!
 
I'm up in Canada also and no problems with the cold and my two. They love the snow and love the cooler weather. I do put on boots on them when we go for long walks to the park, but no coats. I am sure she will do just fine.
 
It just seems so bizaar to think of her trotting around in 4 degrees in nothing but her natural coat, but I'll be waddling behind her in a huge bubble coat, 6 layers of shirts, boots, and thermal pants! :D

But if you guys say she doesn't need anything beyond that, then great, I won't worry. I'll just keep her little paw pads in good condition.
 
i think shelties are smart enough to let u know when they want to come in. they'll come to the door or if u have them on a leash they'll head for the door. and usually depending on what there doing outside might give u a clue too..like for instance when my one sheltie koda who has a thick heavy coat is out side he kinda just stands around and doesnt look to happy so i know he wants to come back in. daisy on the other hand has very little coat and she'll run around outside barking for hrs she doesnt mind the cold at all.and barb is right if they start lifting there paws u might wanna bring them in.
i live within an hr or two from rochester and it can get very cold here and has been getting below 0 at nite.more then likely you'll have a hard time dealing with the cold and snow much more then them. and i dont think they'll really need any special shoes or doggy coats but if u want to take precautions i guess it couldnt hurt.:biggrin2:
 
Agreed, we get a lot of salt and slush here on Canada's east coast, but Toffee gets used to the salt after a while, but I do keep watching his paws, etc
Thus far he has NEVER once told me it is too cold outside.. ever, hahaha and we get darn cold weather here, as my heating bill can attest to!
He DOES however let me know that under no circumstances will he stay out longer than required in rain.. he does not like pouring rain ;)
