This is an update to a post I did months ago about our rescue Murphy (whom we adopted in January 2011). We've had him to our vet a few times for a mysterious cough that comes on sometimes when he's playing and other times when he's not. Not productive, not heart related, but worrisome just the same because the vet can't determine what's causing it. He originally was treated with antibiotics for about 3 weeks and it seemed to go away, only to creep back months later. His gums look good, his heart appears sound, and his cough is not productive.
We have another vet appointment on Monday evening to check his teeth, throat, heart, etc. I will inquire again about X-rays and an ultrasound.
One expensive and invasive recommendation she had was for him to be sedated and have a specialist flush his lungs to look for bacteria. I suppose it would be worth a try, but she didn't seem convinced this would necessarily pinpoint the problem.
Murphy is the sweetest, most lovable little guy in the world so we will certainly keep investigating until we find a cause.
Has anyone else experienced anything similar? Is a trip to the specialist in order??
