My 4.5 year old sheltie has a heart murmur

I have no experience...all I can offer is prayers for you and your furbaby. :hugs

The folks here at SN are huge in support and knowledge. :biggrin2: They (and me now too) will be here for support and venting moments.

It's quite possible it was always there and no one caught it. I've known a couple of dogs that had low grade heart murmers that lived into their teens with no restrictions until nearer to the end.

Our newest foster Sheltie is just 2-3 yrs old and the vet noticed a slight murmur last night during her exam. My heart sank...until I read up on this condition and all of your replies. Hopefully, she will live a long, happy life now that she's on quality food and getting lots of belly rubs!

I'm so sorry to hear this! I lost a 12 year old Sheltie to congestive heart failure 5 years ago. Having been through this, the one thing I can tell you is that the drugs available to treat this are great. My boy was old when the problem was found, so the odds were stacked against him. Because of the age of your dog, I think you will be able to manage the condition with meds, special food, good vet care, and he will live to be a senior dog. Best wishes.
