my puppy eats cat poop

I know this isn't new; all dogs like cat poop. Casey has one favorite walking route and it takes moving heaven & earth to get him to go another way. This route apparently is the designated "toilet" for every cat in our neighborhood. Casey is so quick that before I can blink he can get a mouthful. We do the "leave it" command but he is so very quick that he has the poop before I can get the command out. I have thought about a muzzle for him to wear just when walking on that street but I really hate to do that. what he needs is to obey me, not be muzzled. that's just like putting a band aid on. It's not solving the problem. On the other hand, I just hate it that he eats that disgusting stuff very day. I pull as much out of his mouth as I can (also disgusting to have cat poop under finger nails), but he still eats some. Perhaps I need to keep him on a very short leash on the "cat street". I walk Casey giving him plenty of leash. It's his walk and I allow him to smell all he wants to. It's just that this may have to stop on the "cat street'.

Any suggestions?

After we got off the cat street this morning he was a perfect little man walking home.

Can you muzzle him only on that street and work with him to leave it/look at you? Carry high value treats that you only give on this street.

I would recommend starting Casey on "Heel." I agree -- the muzzle isn't the answer. Since you know where the cat poop is, you can focus on that street for training.

A real treat for shelties! No easy answer. Train to walk to heel and yank the lead (kindly). Both mine do it. One is 12 and one is 2. They don't know we think its disgusting. It's like "lets have some trifle after the main meal". Sometime you have to laugh (exasperatedly!)> Cheers, Dave

There are probably proteins in the stuff that make it absolutely irresistible to dogs. I doubt if it can hurt them, but it certainly is disgusting to human sensibilities!

Also, before you end up with a $12,000 bill over 3 years fighting ecoli your pup may pick up, I would suggest you putsome kind of plastic muzzel aka, one that alows mouth to open but prevents it from eating something harmfull off the ground. We put our dog down for that reason but also, pancritius.

I went out to pick up dog poop yesterday. Both the dogs poo in different areas. Bacca's poo area was poo free.....that could only mean that Indy ate it ALL! Eeeeew!

I'm going to consider a product called Nasty Habits and see if this helps inhibit him.

But I the meantime...thanks Indy for cleaning up Bacca's poo!

I shouldn't laugh, but some of these post brought a smile to me.

Laddie loves poo, although he is getting better. I had a dog back in the states that adored cat poo, we had to fight her for it, she would run to the cat pan and eat it, cat litter and all, it looked like Almond Roca, LOL. She finally grew out of it, but man, it was disgusting. She was not a Sheltie, she was a Chow mix.

I guess all dogs love this "tasty" treat.
