Hi guys,

I thought I'd share two short vids from our last training. It wasn't anything complicated, we're beginners after all (training since November).... Comparing to when we started it's still pretty impressive - my pup used to nip me and bark every time he caught on me. But he progressed and for at least last two months he's been doing great job. My problem is me and my poor handling ....
Anyway, I have a question too - have you taught any special agility commands? How did you teach for example direction commands? i have a bit of problem when i send my dog off, he sometimes turns the opposite direction than I need him - would it help to teach him directions then? Ive heard that cik and cap are more used for tight turns and collected jumps.... do you think its useful for shelties,too? if u have any other verbal command that you think that help with handling, i'd like to hear them :sadsmile:

yes and no ;) my dog doesn't know direction commands like "left" and right", but she knows a command to work away from me. for example in your first video. in front of the tire she would get a command to get "away" from me and not to turn in my direction.

I think it's useful for every dog and handler ;) you have to imagine, that tight turns differ from normal jumps right in the point of drop. at silvia trkman's page you can find a good statement concluding pictures.

so you're saying that instead of the command right, you'd use command away? (i mean in the situation like in the 1st vid?)
and how did u teach away command?

yep, I've seen Silvia's site and I've seen those pics. I guess it's really useful, but wouldn't direction commands would be enough? Though, I guess my pup needs tighter turns, so this could be good for us...

We're still working on commands such as go on, and out. She's getting better, will have to post a video when I'm allowed to get a YouTube . (stupid kidstube deleted all my videos during a site rework :mad:)

we taught right and turn, just our of training I guess. We did do spins, but not much. It's not always consistant, but it works. Your dog looks GREAT! especailly because you've been training only since November! :smile2:
 
I just wanted to chime in and say that I use directionals with my baby dog. She is really fast, and I find that using the words really helps. (It's funny, in watching my videos I can hear myself yelling direction cues!)

With my first dog, I taught "left" and "right" using spins. In other words, I taught the dog to spin in one direction, then added a command. But, I'm not sure he ever translated those properly to the agility field.

With my baby dog, I taught them on the agility field. It's easy to do because there are so many opportunities. I started when she was a puppy; setting up a jump box and just moving with her to one side using lefts and rights. We also used some target plates so she was able to move independently (ahead) of us. I would only use the word when I knew she was going to commit the correct way.
 
Your sheltie is really cute!
I have a question for you shetland sheepdog experts, after reading this sheltie training post - should I give my puppy a biscuit as a prize, for example, if he follows new commands? Is it only useful with sheltie pups or with mature shelties as well?

I like him reading my body language, but when he's ahead of me, he tends to turn to the left side after the jump which is not always good. Tho, we're not going to compete anytime soon (at least four months), so I guess I have time to get it all working.

Nellie, I'd love to see your dog training :wink2: If u get your vids back online, come and share with us. BTW, when do you use cue out? and right and turn=right and left?

We use out when I want her to get away from me, such as in a pinwheel. I usually use a bowling motion or a outstretched hand for that.

For right and turn, I usually use it during a turn or serpentine. If I start with my left hand on a serp, then I quickly turn my right hand as she is jumping, to let her know to turn.
