My sheltie goes crazy when the leaves blow

My four year old female cries and paces when the leaves blow. She goes from glass door to glass door pacing. She's riveted and there is no consoling her.
Anyone have the same situation?
 
Hmm...

I don't know what it could be. Is she like that when she's outside? I know when I'm out with Caliber he looks at me to kick them up. He loves playing in them. Hmm...maybe try bringing some leaves in so she can see they aren't a threat? Then slowly try making a game out of them? That's what I would do...I'm sure someone here will have some sort of solution for you!

I hope you work it out tho! It's hilarious to watch Caliber chase after leaves. :lol:
 
Perhaps she is just anxious to go outside and play with the leaves? My Sadie LOVES leaves!

Similarly, Sadie will run back and forth from the front door to the window whining if she sees her friends playing at the park. I NEVER bring her to the park if she's acting this way. I'll make her go lie down and then bring her once she's quieted down, if its a good time. Perhaps you just need to be firm with her and keep her away form the windows and doors when she's acting this way. Remember to be calm when you send her away from the windows, if you're annoyed and seem tense then she may just get more excited.
 
When she's outside, she can smell the leaves and identify them as a part of the natural environment. When she's inside, they're indistinct shapes that are moving in her territory. It sounds as if she's viewing them as a possible threat. If so, she might benefit from being allowed to go outside and identify them.

Layla can be this way in the evening with shadows. We have a dog door, so she can run outside to see what's up. Once she knows what the shape is, she's fine.
 
I didn't want to create a new thread for this, so thought I'd just add on to one that already touched on crazy Sheltie behaviour.

So my first pup, Timber, used to go NUTS whenever he saw his reflection in glass - any glass would do! I think he thought it was some Sheltie stalker that followed him whereever he went because he would lunge and bark and growl at his reflection. Or maybe he thought he was seeing ghosts!

He actually burned his nose once by continuously attacking his reflection on the glass in front of the gas fireplace (get's very hot!). The funny thing is that he was excellent around other dogs. Only wanted to play and sniff.

I thought this was unique thing with Timber, until a couple of days ago I heard Bacca growling and jumping in the other room. Yep, there he was....attacking his reflection in the glass of the gas fireplace! Just like Timber!

Do any of your pups do the same?

(p.s. if I held him in front of a mirror with myself in view, he would just yawn)
 
Teehee. Romeo barks at his reflection in the oven door. Not the usual "Come play with me" bark but the intruder alert bark (maybe coz we're indoors?). Even if I get down on all fours and point out that lookie here! Mummy's in there too, he doesn't seem to realise that the dog in the oven is him. I think that's the only place he'll bark at his reflection. He doesn't do it with his reflection in the piano or the side of a car and like yours Barb, Romeo doesn't seem to care much about his reflection in the mirror when I carry him up to it.
I never thought much about it but I'm going to experiment on this reflection thing tonight!
 
Up until Sadie was approx. 8 months old she used to jump at her reflection every time she saw it. At puppy agility there was a big mirror on the floor and she loved dancing around in front of it barking and growling at herself. It was always a playful "Come play with me!" sort of bark, it never really startled her.

She still likes to look at herself in the mirror but the mirror seems to have lost is original appeal :smile2:
 
My girl Zoe will from time to time go nuts at the back sliding glass door and it's a total alert bark. I will go and look and there is nothing out there, I think like Bacca, she is just seeing her reflection. Her former owners told me that she would bark at herself in their slidding glass door so it's something that at the age of 7 she has not grown out of! Silly dogs!
 
Yep, Barkley still barks at himself when it's dark and he can see his reflection in our sliding glass door, but never when he sees himself in mirrors. :confused2: Go figure. Like everyone else has said, he is convinced there's a Barkley clone out there trying to get him. :uhoh:
 
Yes, that's it exactly! It's definitely an alert bark: "Lookout, Mom - It's that damn Sheltie that keeps following me around everywhere! But don't worry, I'm on it! I'll get rid of him!"

Maybe it's just a Sheltie thing....my family always used to tease me about how "dumb" Timber was for doing this (he had a very delicate head, and therefore not enough room for a full brain!) :(

Now that I know that other "smart" Shelties, with bigger heads and brains, do the same thing, I can hold my own head up proud again! :smile2:
