"nappy" ear fur HELP!

My 9 month old sheltie Tessie gets really nappy fur around her ears. It gets all kinky and messy after no time. We've tried brushing it, using puppy wipes and nothing seems to help it comes back. Does anyone have any similar experiences with this problem? Do you have any tips on how to fix this? Thanks!
 
This is pretty common. Both of my dogs are prone to knots behind their ears. The fur back there is silkier than the rest of their fur. The best thing you can do is to brush it on a regular basis. I brush at least once a week back there just to keep knots from forming.

I usually add some baby powder after I'm done brushing to cut back on the greasiness that can lead to knots, but the best thing you can do is to make it a habit to brush/comb back there on a regular basis.
 
and just make sure the fur is not too long that will also cause knots. If you keep the fur trimmed it stays pretty much tangle free...unless ofcourse you have other dogs dragging said dog around the yard by their head:lol::rolleyes2:
 
thanks for all your replies!:smile2: we will definately try some baby powder or corn starch for her greasy ear fur! Luckily she doesn't get knots, just the greasy, kinky, not so pretty as the rest of her fur. My boyfriend brushes her ears maybe everyother day. I'm sure as she matures she will grow out of this! (I hope!)

Welcome to the forum! I am also in Massachusetts, on the Cape. Do you have pictures of your pup?

She may not -- a couple of mine still have the greasies. But with baby powder and keeping the ends of that fur trimmed (the lanky ends look worse), she'll keep looking fresh!

Maggie's fur is sooo much longer than the other two so I brush behind her ears constantly. It never really helped all that much (I agree the lanky ends look bad too) so I just try to keep it trimmed. Makes a world of a difference.
