Hi Everyone!!!,
My 1yr and 3 month old puppy Blacky is having skin problems for the past few months.
It started a few months ago and the vet said it was dermatitis and gave some antibiotics and nizoral shampoo.
It got better but has never fully went away. He has these flaky patches that you can feel through the coat. He is shedding a little more than usual.
I started to give him fish oil about a week ago.
But to make matters worse is that he is a terrible eater. When he was a puppy i couldn't even load the bowl without him almost toppling me over trying to get to him. Than we tried him on a human food diet. And we think thats when his skin problems started. So we are now back on a dog food diet. We tried everything, cans, cans with dry good, grain free, organic, you name it we treid it. We put it in the bowl and he comes smells it and walks away. Sometimes he will eat a little from out hands.
Can someone please offer some advice. I know i put a lot out there but i wanted to be thorough.
He is still playfull and full of energy throughout all this

Could be a food allergy also could be a staph infection if it is not going away. Have they done a skin scraping to culture it or are there any Dermatologists in your area? Could also be a thyroid issue have you tested his thyroid?

Many folks have had success using Vibrant Pets. I recommend it highly -- the coat formula. And it's a money-back guarantee. Put Sheltie in the promo code, and Lee will give you 20% off.

How long did you try each food for? If it's a food allergy and you switch foods, it can take 4-6 weeks or even longer for skin allergy symptoms to clear up.

Define "human food diet".

I have yet to see a dog have issues caused by a good whole food diet.

Anyway, I firmly believe most picky eating issues are human-induced. Put the food down, give ten minutes to eat, take it up. No babying, no changing foods, no adding food to entice them. Either eat or don't. We used to get spoiled rescue dogs like this, who refused to eat. three days is what the hard core dogs will hold out. Most give in on day two. He is working it and you are playing right into it. Even our dog in juvenile kidney failure ate like a pig until right before she died.

Sounds like some kind of allergy. Grain is a common cause, but ask your vet to do allergy testing. We used to use a fish oil that was so stinky (my dogs looooved it) that it made anything enticing to dogs. I could not stand the smell, so we use natural capsules of fish oil that my dogs chew happily. My Dash has a similar skin issue, which, in his case, is an overgrowth of the natural skin bacteria. He also has low thyroid and is on meds. We've seen huge improvement in his fur growth, but it was taken a year! I wish you the best, but def seek the vet's advice for some allergy testing.
