I'm stumped though. I've been putting it down in our dog yard and it may be killing the ticks and fleas but there are ant hills all over the place. I can't figure out why it isn't killing them too!

I was reading Dr. Bragg's book just now and it said you can use vinegar/water on ant hills to get rid of them. Maybe try that!

If you have a Tractor Supply Company (TSC) they usually carry DE, it goes by the name Red Lake Earth. It can be found in the cattle area or in the chicken (smaller container) area of the store. I paid 11.99 for a 40 pound bag.

If you dont have a TSC you may want to check your local co-op, or any other place farmers shop.

I mix DE in my rabbit food, cat food, and feed it to the dogs. Another thing you can do is mix apple cider vinager in their water, I mix 1 tablespoon per gallon of water.

Thanks, Mary! I use the vinegar/water mixture to spray on the dogs for fleas and ticks so that makes sense. I've also used salt to repel ants but I don't want to put it in the dog yard because they'll eat it. I'll try the vinegar. Still wonder why the DE doesn't work on them though.... :confused2:

I did find a TSC here (actually in CT but it's closer to me than the one in MA b/c I live on the border) and it has a 20lb. bag for 12.99 online so I'll go into the store to see if they have a larger bag. Thanks.

for putting it in the yard, you can also get DE at pool supply stores. that's where i got mine. i wouldn't eat it, but you can use it in the yard.

What is the dilution you use with the Neem Oil. I ask because it is not recommended used on children as it can be toxic to them and a dog is a lot smaller than an adult human and is likely to lick at itself.

Yeah, all essential oils undiluted can harm people/dogs. They're a very strong concentration and you really only need a tiny bit. I use between 3-5 drops shampoo and use almond oil to dilute that on top of mixing it into the shampoo. My dogs never lick themselves after I put any oil on, but that's why I said no to use it around cats. Also, they can't lick their collar and that's the only place I apply it undiluted, and then just on drop. Neem oil is in a lot of flea shampoos and is commonly used by holistic people for fleas. If you dilute it with carrier oil, you'll be safe.

Also, I wouldn't even put the pool grade down in the yard, but that's just me.

I thought I should ask the question because I am interested in using a different approach but also because I had visions of someone thinking they could just spray Neem onto their dog.
I'm not sure I understand how you use the Almond oil to dilute the Neem - call me dense! Could you go through exactly how you make up your concoction please.

It was a good question to ask. It's really good to learn about essential oils, read some internet pages, before using them because they are potent. They're not difficult to use, though.

Don't feel dense! I read up on it for days before I used them. maybe longer, lol.

The solution I use is: 10-12 total drops of essential oils in each ounce of carrier oil (almond or coconut or grape seed oil). Then I pour that into a spray bottle with 16 oz of distilled water. I spray that one them daily, us, and the yard.

For the shampoo I usually do about 5 drops and half an oz of carrier oil. I bought a plastic bottle that holds 8 oz so I put the mix in and add shampoo to fill it up. i have three dogs so I use the whole bottle at once. I do this every Sunday.

Hi can you tell which eucalyptus your get (lemon of globulos) and what dilution of water or vinegar you use for the 10 drops. thanks brit

Ticks are a bit hard, but even the toxic tick poison doesn't always work. For ticks, I'd actually suggest Euclaptyus oil as it's been proven ticks hate it and I put it directly on a tick not too long ago and it died.

We make up a spray of water(filtered), or we use vinegar, ten drops of eucalyptus oil, and almond oil and apply that to dogs, humans, and yard daily.

Oh, we also drop a drop of straight oil on their collars each week and the smell usually lasts a week. I've also soaked their collars in the solution but I found it better to put a single drop of the oil on the collar, let it dry, then put it back on the dog. don't use essential oils on cats and don't let the cat around the dog until it's dried if you have one.

It works fabulous for us but then again holistics don't always work unless you live an entirely holistic lifestyle. Meaning using essential oils and toxins can make it not work because the toxins tax the body and fleas(not as much sure about ticks) will be more drawn to them because of this. It's worth a shot, though. It clearly works as we haven't had a flea (and less ticks)in 16 months! I've seen less ticks , but do occasionally find them If I forget to spray. We use Diatamacious Earth in the yard also and I, believe, it kills ticks.
