Help chaps, I'm confused!!
Conventional wisdom suggests I should get 9-month-old Howard neutered. I hear there are both health and behavioral benefits.
However, I just found some research online which suggests the health benefits may be trumped up, and that there may actually be more health downside to neutering/spaying your dog.
I was on the verge of going ahead with it until I read this. And it looks like a trustworthy source of info too. Here's the PDF - it's quite in-depth, but the vital info is all in the summary at the start:

Does anyone have any thoughts? I'm willing to accept the behavioral benefits make the potentially increased health risk worthwhile. What do you Sheltie lovers think? As far as we're concerned, Howard has no real behavioral problems - he may bark a bit more than our liking, and he pees all over the garden to mark his territory, but this is hardly an issue for us. What other behavioral bads will he develop as he gets older if I don't get him neutered?
Also, back when we got him, the breeder said there was no need to neuter him. I trust her opinion, she is a top breeder, and she knew Howard was only going to be a pet. What do other Sheltie breeders normally recommend?
Thanks anyone for sharing your thoughts. This is turning out to be a really tough decision
